Festival of the Lost 2018
Plumbers Crack and 2 others reacted to GazzaGarratt for a topic
Festival of the Lost begins for all players of Destiny 2 on Tuesday, October 16. “I’ll be damned if we’re gonna sit around and mope all day—Cayde woulda hated that. So let’s have some fun, huh? Put on this mask, and go show the bad guys they can’t keep us down.” —Amanda Holliday For Guardians, death is usually a temporary condition, no more dangerous than a splinter and forgotten just as quickly. Even after Eva Levante first brought the City’s traditions to the Tower with Festival of the Lost, it was less a time for remembrance and more of an irreverent celebration. The last year has changed everything. The Red Legion razed the Last City. Countless Guardians were lost. Despite victories on Mercury and Mars, morale in the Tower is low after the fall of a legend: Cayde-6. This year, death has not passed us by. It has come to stay. More than ever, it’s important to remember loved ones who have fallen, and to celebrate the fact that we have lived to fight on in their honor. Light in the Dark No one has heard from Eva Levante since the City fell. Shipwright Amanda Holliday has stepped up to raise everyone’s spirits. Thanks to her, the Tower is filled with merriment, as memories good and bittersweet fill our hearts. New Triumphs will be available for you to earn, and Holliday will offer daily bounties that award Fragmented Souls. These items can be used to purchase Festival of the Lost masks, as well as the Horror Story Legendary Auto Rifle. But even with the Tower illuminated by spooky violet candles, there's always something scary lurking just out of sight. Fear and Fright This year, Festival of the Lost brings more than just masks. For a limited time, all players of Destiny 2 are invited to the Haunted Forest. Guardians have been tasked with clearing out its ghouls and demons, which are spooking up a storm. You’ll have 15 minutes to dive as deep as you can into the Haunted Forest and clear out the Nightmares lying in wait. Be wary—the deeper you go, the more difficult your job will become. You can jump into the dark as a solo player, with a pre-made fireteam, or through matchmaking to join other Guardians in the fight. On the Case Most players of Forsaken have already won justice for Cayde-6. But near the conclusion of Festival of the Lost, they'll be called once again to avenge a fallen friend. Master Ives has been struck down. Maybe someone wanted to settle an old score, or lost their temper when receiving an Edge Transit. Whatever provoked the wrongdoing, justice must be served. This pursuit of Master Ives' killers will take place through a quest line, which adds an additional powerful reward for you to earn each week. The hunt begins on Tuesday, October 30. Treats for All Alongside the Festival of the Lost rewards from Amanda Holliday and the Festival of the Lost Triumphs, players will earn an Ephemeral Engram every time they fill their XP bar after achieving the max character level. Players will receive this engram in addition to the Steadfast Engram, which effectively awards players double Bright Engrams for the duration of Festival of the Lost. Players may also purchase Ephemeral Engrams from Tess Everis in the Tower, if they so choose. Tess will also feature rewards from the Ephemeral Engram on the Bright Dust store throughout the event, for those wishing to purchase specific items directly. Every Guardian is invited to shoot their way through the masquerade. Festival of the Lost begins on Tuesday, October 16, and concludes at 10 AM PST on Tuesday, November 6.3 points -

This trailer just shows how much backing there is for the game. The amount of well-known actors and actresses in this is impressive. I'm really looking forward to when this game finally gets there. What's not to love about Gary Oldman?! Even the enemies look impressive.2 points -

I guessed it right! The "patch" isn't a patch at all. It's the whole fucking game! The disc is near enough blank and is just a key to play the game. https://twitter.com/DanHolmes12/status/10503294774971432972 points -

Physical or digital?
SPFreely reacted to crispymorgan for a topic
Cropped up on the BLOPS game thread, but I thought I'd split it out. Personally I favour digital because I have 2 PS4 systems that use the same license at the same time, effectively I can buy 2 copies for the price of one. Also I don't have to lean forward and remove a disc (very hard work). And there is no chance of loss/damage. What are your thoughts?1 point -

Raid Boss Archetype & Last Wish's Failure
GazzaGarratt reacted to The3rdWalker for a topic
Original source can be found here. History Lesson. Let’s start our history lesson from the very beginning. Vault of Glass contains 2 main raid bosses: The Templar and Atheon. Each boss ascribes to their own special rule, which I will be naming after them. The Templar fight follows the titular Templar Rule, which holds that the boss is immune to or shielded from all forms of damage until players successfully engage with the boss’s mechanic. Only after completing the mechanic can players begin a DPS phase. This rule is can be applied to most raid bosses in D1 and D2, and it’s the only thing separating said raid bosses from your average strike bosses. The beauty of these fights is that they can all be one-phased, but still feel more engaging than your average strike boss by requiring the successful completion of their respective mechanics. Examples (with minimum requirements) include: Templar (Vault of Glass; use the Relic to break its shield) Crota (Crota’s End; DPS his shield and use the Sword to damage him) Warpriest (King’s Fall; activate each plate in correct order) Vosik (Wrath of the Machine; throw balls at his face and shoot monitors) Aksis (Wrath of the Machine; kill color-coded Servitors and throw balls at his face) Bathing Crystals (Leviathan; activate each plate) Calus (Leviathan; kill skulls in the void realm) Argos (Eater of Worlds; break shield using Vex craniums) Val Ca’uor (Spire of Stars; destroy two ships and throw balls at his face) Morgeth (Last Wish; acquire 10 Taken Strength stacks and get balls in your face) The Atheon fight, however, follows a different rule. The Atheon Rule holds that the boss can be damaged at any point, but has an insane amount of health; however, players can acquire a damage-dealing buff by properly engaging with the boss’s mechanics. The Atheon Rule is very similar to the Templar Rule, with the exception that it opens up the possibility for extremely coordinated and highly-leveled teams to bypass the boss’s mechanics. The bypassing of Atheon-like boss mechanics is typically not frowned upon, as doing so is a special challenge in its own right. Also, like Templar-style fights, Atheon-style fights can all be one-phased after successfully completing the mechanics. Examples include: Atheon (Vault of Glass; escape the past/future for a buff) Golgoroth (King’s Fall; stand in goo pit for buff) [how could I forget you?] Garden Dogs (Leviathan; empower spores for a stacking buff) King’s Fall brought with it a 3rd type of boss fight, which follows the Oryx Rule. In the King’s Fall raid’s final fight, the Oryx Rule mandates that a specific amount of phases must occur in order to defeat a boss. In the case of Oryx himself, that means 4 phases of mechanics and DPS checks must occur in order to defeat the boss. Ergo, one-phasing is impossible, which in my opinion is lame, but that's a different topic altogether. Examples of Oryx Rule fights include: Oryx (King’s Fall; survive 4 phases) Shuro Chi (Last Wish; rush through 6 phases) If you couldn’t tell already, every raid boss pre-Last Wish has been accounted for. Every prior raid boss adhered to either the Templar, Atheon, or Oryx rule, which all demanded strict adherence to the boss’s mechanics. All but 2 could be one-phased after mastery of the boss's respective mechanics. This, however, changed with the Last Wish raid’s first and final boss fights. Kalli and Riven both adhere to Strike boss rules. In other words, they are fully open to damage (and being one-phased, or technically 0-phased) whether or not the mechanics of their fights have been engaged. This has led to teams stacking up in corners and nuking Kalli without paying any attention to her symbols, plates, or safe rooms. It’s also led to the infamous Riven cheese, which in my eyes, is not a cheese, but a failure of the raid designers. So what happened in Last Wish? This brings us to Rule #1 of designing a raid boss encounter: bosses must hide DPS phases, even mere seconds of them, behind mechanics. Rule #1 has been achieved through the Templar, Atheon, and Oryx Rules for various different fights. First mechanics, then DPS. Every time. Kalli and Riven drastically changed that and placed DPS before mechanics, which has led to a very obvious outcome: people are skipping the mechanics. The solution is not to nerf Cluster Rockets. If a team of Edge Transits can “cheese” Riven, then it’s very obvious where the problem lies. The raid design team has unfortunately failed for both the Kalli and Riven fights. The solution, however, is pretty simple (but probably not so simple to code). Kalli should adopt the Atheon rule — let her be prone to only minor damage while she’s booping people off plates, and let each cleansed plate add a stack of a damage dealing buff. With that change, if players are able to stack in a corner and kill her before engaging with the mechanics, it at least will not be so trivial. For Riven, the most obvious solution would be to have her follow the Templar Rule and switch up the eye-shooting mechanic. Rather than having a DPS phase followed by shooting the eyes, have Riven be immune to all damage until her correct eyes are shot. Shooting the wrong eyes will cause a wipe, whereas shooting the correct eyes will apply a damage dealing buff and open Riven up to a 10 second damage phase. With that simple tweak in mechanic ordering, the Riven fight can no longer be easily cheesed. Players will need to at least bait, call out the eyes, and then perhaps be able to one-phase her with 3 to 5 players. Too Long; Didn't Read. The Riven "cheese" is a fault in basic raid boss design and should be a lesson for future bosses. If you give players a DPS phase before mechanics, they will obviously always ignore the mechanics (give them an inch, and they'll take a mile). Adhering to the Templar, Atheon, or Oryx Rules avoids this issue.1 point -
Physical or digital?
SPFreely reacted to GazzaGarratt for a topic
Well I think you know why the second option has a vote so far I did write about this when we had a blog as its something i'm quite passionate about. I think it boils down to the facts of practicalities so I do understand why people go for Digital and also why the only reason most of you still buy Physical because of 1) Price and 2) resaleability. I think I just have some hereditary traits in me, like hoarding/collecting things and some principles that stick with me. I love the aesthetics of buying physical games although now they don't even give manuals for most games which is disappointing. For some reason my brain doesn't feel attached to Digital games as much as they don't feel 'real' - its probably why I am more inclined to play console over PC maybe. Maybe not relevant for newer games but for older games I think the argument is there more in my favour. They came fully complete with no Day One patch and they hands down beat emulators for feel and aesthetics, with original graphics and controllers. Nothing beats blowing the cartridge, sticking Wiz n Liz in and playing some levels like the old days with your mates.1 point -

Physical copy for myself. The reason is simply down to cost. I can buy a disc copy for £10 cheaper than digital. And when I'm done I can then sell the game. This means that, on average, it costs me £25 for a game. Compared to £60 for a digital copy. Why would I not want to save £35? Via the FG App1 point

For me if it’s a single player game I would like the disc. It’s future proof if you ever want to go back and play it again in the future when you want to go back and play old games like you would with ps2 games as an example now1 point -

I'm going to order springs. I may try a bit of modding, button colours and stuff. I can certainly sort it out. The stupid ebay seller still hasn't sorted their fuck up out. IIrish should have sent 4 sticks, but i only got one. The dog had since eaten it because my wife moved the package and it looked tasty i presume. I've told them to issue a refund but nothing yet. It's only a few quid, but it's the principle. Via the FG App1 point -

Lol, that Cat Ghost. The fact it has sticky tape is hilarious and shouts NEED ME. I'm looking forward to the variants of bounties it will bring. It's only here for 3 weeks so I'd like to get the most of out of it, especially as its free and being a magpie, I'm likely to want the Triumphs on offer too. We'll have to see what this Forest is about. It sounds like a 15-minute horde mode. Good break from different stuff but I think it's only out for 3 weeks for a reason. I'd be interested to see if it can be reused though. Would hate good fun content we all enjoy to not be available ever again. I want that gun too! If there's only one gun on offer (still more than other free events) then you'd expect it to be a pretty decent gun!1 point -

CrustyPilot review: Having been totally surprised by this new feature of the FG website, I took the opportunity to send off Sick Controller #1. Unfortunately, a break down in the supply chain lead to an unavoidable delay in the controller parts and much frustration of Dr.Crispy, who was itching to complete his first “operation”. Eventually, new parts were sourced and the repairs completed. The controller was then extensively tested before being shipped back by first class post Apart from the aforementioned glitch, the whole operation went smoothly and bodes well for future “patients” I would recommend this facility to anyone wishing to breathe new life into a faltering controller, particularly if you can’t make your damn character sprint!! Thanks again Dr. Crispy! 9/10....because no-one’s perfect 😉😘1 point -

That was ridiculous. 3 we got in the beta, 3 that I hated and that only left 3 which were moderately acceptable. Some of the DLC were remakes of old maps that were already remade in Infinite Warfare the year before too! It'll be 15 with Nuketown in BO4 and although there are classic maps,; they are really good ones that should work well in the game. Wish there were a couple more but it's far better than the selection we got in WW2. We also have a big fucking map in Blackout at least.1 point -
14 maps at launch is certainly better than the pathetic 9 maps that WW2 shipped with.1 point
