  1. I pretty much agree with everything in that article. The one big thing is complete games. It was always a big deal when someone came up or heard of a "cheese" or "easy way" to beat a boss or pass a level and have it still be there to use if needed. The pause trick in Mega Man 1. After shooting your electric shot, rapidly pause the game when it first hits an enemy/boss and the damage will tick every time you unpause the game. It made some boss encounters in that one a breeze. Challenge I'm iffy on. Some games back then were flat out cheap as oppose to hard. I look at games like the Souls series, Elden Ring, Sifu and all of those have learning curves that once learned, make the game more manageable. Some retro games had the same formula, but due to the tech at the time, still ended up being really heap with respawning enemies if you move off screen then come back. Ninja Gaiden... Castlevania... I've actually been on a retro style fix lately. Live A Live, Odin Sphere, TMNT, Mega Man, and some retro style current games like The Messenger. There's just something about that style of graphics that tickles my sweet-spot in just the right way.
  2. I just finished it tonight. There was one really broken item I got from a unique boss fight called cola bottle. It's an accessory that you can use infinitely as an item that does guaranteed 999 damage to anything you attack it with. Broken as hell. The pre-history chapter was really fun. It closed up nicely. I was a little shocked at the length to. I managed to finish it at around 7 hours. On to Imperial China where an old martial arts master is seeking a protege to carry on his fighting style. The voice acting is really well done too, as well as the ancient Chinese themed music. Good ole 16 bit soundtracks are just fucking awesome
  3. A bit late it's a long weekend herein Canada) but here is the latest episode of Dice to Pixels. We talk about the new campaign book Journey to The Radiant Citadel for DnD 5E as well as our preferences for playing said game. Also available on RSS and Spotify.
  4. I never seen this one for sale in my part of Canada, but I remember reading some articles in various magazines about it. It was one of those instances when trying to compete with the Gameboy was damn near impossible. The only other handheld console I ever wanted at the time was the Neo Geo Pocket Color. Sadly, I never seen that one either...
  5. ok, I'm a fair bit into the pre-history section so here's a few of my thoughts so far... I'm really digging the combat in this. It takes the ATB (Active Time Battle) system and adds the strategic element of a grid based system. As battle begins, you can move one square in any direction you wish. As you move a space, all time bars (which is called a Charge Gauge) for both player characters and enemies slowly fills. If you haven't made it to an enemy in time to act, there's a very good chance they will before you can. It really adds a but of forethought into movement. Some skills have a specific area they will affect. The one skill my character has currently, as an example, is a jump attack that requires you to position yourself further away from the enemy in order to hit. Others encompass a huge amount of the battle ground that can hit multiple enemies, but be warned. Some skills leave an area of effect on the ground that can damage your other characters if they are currently occupying those areas. As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be any random encounters thus far. The main character in the pre-history section can "sniff" the air to "catch the scent" of creatures or items scattered around the area. These seem to be limited but you can refresh the area by going in and out of other locations. So far, so good.
  6. Nice collection @Luseth I remember having Breath of Fire 4, but I can't really recall much of it.
  7. I picked this up the other day. I've started a game, beginning with the pre-historic era, and it's definetly giving the Octopath Traveler vibe. The backgrounds look really good and blend in well with the sprite animations. I'm digging this character so far. There's no conversations. Only pre-historic caveman grunts and groans with some word bubbles depicting pictures of what the NPCs are trying to convey. I'll keep updating as a get further in.
  8. Cheers folks! We appreciate it! 🤘
  9. I always found CRT to be the best display choice for retro console gaming. The newer TVs now a days really show off the flaws of sprite based graphics. I do like how some classic game compilations give the option to use an old school CRT type scaling.
  10. I can't say I'm sad. This is another one that didn't need a remake in my opinion.
  11. And boom. RSS feeds are available. Here's our Spotify link.
  12. I finished this one last night. It's a very disappointing ending IMO. I won't get into details, but if you play through it, you'll see what I mean. This is one example where I'm glad they didn't charge full price for this one. Getting through the story will take most roughly 4-8 hours, even with finding all the collectibles. We may end up talking about this one on a Dice to Pixels episode soon. If you're curious about it, wait for a sale or when it becomes a PS Plus monthly freebie.
  13. I've heard comparisons to Chrono Trigger but I believe there is a bit of some tactical RPG systems, like a grid, in there too. I may end up grabbing it.
  14. Again, yet another example of "been there, done that." Pass.
  15. This one has just released on July 22nd for the Switch and it's giving me some old school, classic SNES ROG vibes. This is a remake/rerelease of a title that never made it's debut over here. If anyone grabs it, please let us know what you think about the game. I'm very curious about it.
  16. As @J4MES OX4D mentioned in a separate thread, GR: Frontline, along with a Splinter Cell VR game, and 2 unknown/unannounced games have all been cancelled by Ubisoft. They've also delayed the release of the upcoming Avatar game. Reasons given by a Ubisoft exec was a "cost cutting measure to emphasize even more focus on our biggest development opportunities." Thoughts? Ubisoft Cancels Ghost Recon Frontline, Splinter Cell VR, Two Unannounced Games WWW.GAMEINFORMER.COM Ghost Recon's foray into battle royale will not see the light of day.
  17. Episode 3 is up on our Youtube channel. RSS feeds for previous episodes are being uploaded shortly and should be available through your favourite podcast apps soon.
  18. Not really surprising. All of the typical Ubisoft micro-transactions aside, I've found the ghost recon series really deviating away from what it was all about initially.
  19. Release date has been confirmed for August 30th 2022! I can't wait to play some of these classics again.
  20. Early thoughts so far... A lot of movement is very scripted. Every jump in the game is guaranteed and the only time you'll fail is if it involves a cut scene of the cat falling. All the little cat actions are there. Meowing a lot, clawing up trees, doors and carpets, knocking stuff off of ledges and shelves. It's a cat lovers dream. Yes, @Rumelylady did give the sad face at the start of the game when the cat was "hurt" but it's not graphically violent at all. There's a little robot companion you find that helps you along the way and you can find "memories" to help it remember who it is. No real combat to speak of. It's more avoiding the little enemies that look an awful lot like the face huggers from half life. Decent so far. I'll update as I go.
  21. I'm gonna pick this one up tomorrow. Since @Rumelylady and myself are cat people, this should be a fun one to play through.
  22. The original had such a unique graphical style at the time that really made it stand out from the crowd. The "remake" made that style look far too realistic. By that, I mean the color palettes were too dark and didn't have that vibrant cel shaded look like the original. Shame. Here's hoping whoever tries to remake it again gives it the treatment it deserves.
  23. That's amazing! These would need to be the machines at that nintendo theme park in Japan. Lol!
  24. Happy Birthday @G_dub52 🤘
  25. Episode 2 is live! RSS and Spotify are coming very soon. Enjoy!
