PC build for my 14 year old
TurboR56Mini and 3 others reacted to Diddums for a topic
I'm so far out of the hardware loop that I couldn't even tell you whether to go AMD or Intel anymore. So to that end I'll suggest selling the kid and pooling the money for his PC and going to Vegas instead.4 points -
PC build for my 14 year old
GazzaGarratt and 2 others reacted to Greboth for a topic
Intel or AMD for a CPU is a little from column A and a little column B. On the top end, AMD releae a new chip and tale the lead, then Intel release a new chip and take the lead then rinse and repeat. More mid-range it gets a bit murkier as I’m not sure on the price to performance. I’m also not certain of prices in USD but for a similar budget here you could get something like a Ryzen 5600x or Intel 12400 with appropriate motherboard. I’d recommend 16Gb RAM with as fast as you can get, probably 3200MHz at minimum. I’d also recommend getting an M2 SSD as they’re super fast and you could re-use your existing drives as additional storage. PSU it depends what you end up speccing and future proofing you want to do. Once you have a rough idea of spec there’s plenty of PSU calculators online. I’d guess you’ll only probably need 500-600W at most. Though depending on how long you expect the PC to go for and if it will see futude GPU upgrades, it’s cheaper to spec higher watt one now than have to change in the future. Corsair, Seasonic and SuperFlower are generally the top brands but it does depend on specific models. Case, I’m sure you could re-use the existing one as not much really changes in cases design except for the addition of tempered glass and generally a reduction in hdd bays. So up to you on if you want to switch cases. GPU, I’d imagine you could get a RTX3060. Dependong on USD pricing and if you don’t want a case, you might be able to go for a 3070. Though even a 3060 is 4x or 5x faster than a 480 so would be a massive improvement. If you go on PC part picker you can spec a PC and share a link for us to look at. For some reason, on my phone, it defaults to UK so can’t put a US build together.3 points -

My logistics journey continues slowly but surely. I’ve fully paid off my initial loan so it leaves me with just ~£4.5k a day to pay in loans. So, with no help from crashing and speeding tickets, I’ve saved enough to buy my second garage. Though I don’t yet have the money to buy any trucks to fill the second garage 😄 Only need to save ~£200k for the trucks so shouldn’t take too long. I’ve fully ranked up the long distance and high value on my drivers so now ranking up their hazerdous materials. Hopefully, once everything is fully ranked up they will start earning some better money. Though £4-£5k a day total isn’t to be sniffed at but it’d be nice to earn a little more to help towards more trucks and garages.3 points -

Hey folks, I'm Tove and am new around here, late 30s lifelong gamer dad. I'm mostly into FPS and Fighting games. Most recently playing the new call of duty and enjoying it at around 100 Hours in. I used to play a lot of Dead by Daylight but had to step away from that earlier this year and have spent most of it trying to find a new main multiplayer game which I seem to have found in MWII I thought it might be Overwatch 2 but the solo experience on that was just dire. I've been looking for somewhere to post and chat with others about gaming! So you might see more of me in the forums!2 points -

Easy Mounted Kills
J4MES OX4D and one other reacted to GazzaGarratt for a topic
I hadn't noticed that so far so thanks for sharing Kenny! Funnily enough though I believe there is an automatic setting that I seem to have switched on that helps me auto mount whenever i'm close to things so I've not had to worry too much about mounted kills just yet. I'm sure for the long range ones though I'll need this!2 points -

Can't believe Championship is slowly getting going again already, where has the time gone?? Hopefully the small break will help keep the league competitive way into next year. Its definitely been a mental year in the Championship as everyone is beating everyone. This is the year for some surprises in that top 6.2 points -

Some fantastic upsets just showing why football is loved so much being one of the most unpredictable sports in the world. Really hoping we can carry momentum into the Senegal game today. I really do think it will be a tough match and probably more stop/start than a full flowing game. Feeling positive still though so come on England!2 points -

Do I absolutely need to use a wheel for this? Just thinking sometimes to hop in here and there may be just a ballache getting my wheel out every time. I picked up the version with some xpacs that were on sale so all in all cost less than 10 quid. Just need to find some time to get on over some weekends so I can get used to it. Whats a good first objective to aim for?2 points -

Got the Icarus done today. The best gun in the game in my opinion. I needed to get the mantle kills done. I have a 2.1 K/D using that gun. Nothing else I have compares to it. Also did the SPR 208. I really like that gun too2 points -

California trip
GazzaGarratt reacted to Docwagon for a topic
We went out to California again, visiting the in-laws in Anaheim and taking the opportunity to go back to Death Valley and the Mojave Preserve. We didn't get to do everything I'd hoped due to flood damage closing some roads and trails, but we did get to see things we hadn't done last time. I couldn't sneak my Power Wagon into checked bags so I made due with a rental Ram Classic 1500 4x4. Only one hill was a little sketchy, it did everything else without drama, though I did get a little nervous on one section of softer sand. My wife wanted to stop for a photo but I was afraid we wouldn't be able to get going again if I lost momentum and I didn't want to rely on random Jeep Bros to help us out, though I'm sure they would have. Those are all from Death Valley. Temps were in the 60s most of the day, colder at higher elevations and warmer at lower elevation, so we did a lot more hiking the canyons and trails then last time. We stayed in the park again, but this time at The Ranch at Death Valley. Nice hotel, terrible restaurant. Avoid. Drive to Beatty NV or at least to Stovepipe Well village in the park, much better food. Various places in the Mojave Preserve, including the Lava Tubes, which was the main goal for the day. These photos were taken on the trail network behind my BIL's house. At least 18 miles of trails that start about 2 blocks from his back door. I think the last rock formation looks like a mummy, but some have said nun or mermaid when I showed it to them. I have a ton of other photos, but many are too big for my free host to accept and share. We went to Huntington Beach and climbed around on the rocks, found tidal pools with sea urchins and other little sea creatures living in them, went to the Santa Monica pier, and several other little day trips. I have to say I've rarely met anyone as nice and nobody more generous as my BIL that we stayed with. He's the one who donated 2/3 of his liver in a futile attempt to save SIL's life. Just a genuinely incredible guy and we got along great the entire stay. MIL was still there and of course that was great. I met two more BILs I hadn't met before, but work schedules and distance kept us from spending a lot of time together. All in all, a really great trip.1 point -
PC build for my 14 year old
GazzaGarratt reacted to McNasty for a topic
Sup fellas I got a $500 gift card from some work stuff, and spent a few days looking for crap to buy and couldn't come with anything that wasn't just spending to spend. My son is pretty into PC gaming and has a bunch of friends on discord that play together. Currently our setup is a rig that I built about 10 years ago - i7-2600k, GTX 480, 8gb, a few SSDs and SATA drives, Sabertooth p67 board, dual monitors. Not anything fancy in today's terms but it was a big chunk of money 10 years ago and thankfully it's still working really well. I had the store build it for me originally but I've taken it apart and cleaned it a couple of times so I'm not opposed to buying everything separate and building it with my son so he can learn. Given all he knows is that 10 year old rig, I don't see any reason to go crazy on budget and buy top of the line stuff so I'm thinking a max budget of like $1k USD. I would think I could get at least the same specs as my current setup 10 years later for that budget amount. I think I spent around $2500 for the original setup and hopefully Moores law gets me better than that for this budget. I do want to future proof this a little bit but I don't know how much is too much in terms of device specs and I don't want to go overboard for no reason. He can use his own money later on to upgrade this as he wants. I don't know anything about todays current standards for gaming requirements, so just looking for advice on what you would buy if I handed you $1k. Everything he plays now has zero issues on our current setup but thats mostly minecraft and he's getting into mods and fancy stuff. If the budget needs to go up that's fine, I just figured this was a good starting point and with the gift card it would only cost me $500. I'm not including monitors in this, I have a bunch of good ones collecting dust and we can make that birthday presents or he can buy them if he wants. Appreciate any suggestions!1 point -

Battlefield 2042 Now
IRaMPaGe reacted to J4MES OX4D for a topic
Yeah, I stopped playing Battlefield 4 within the first week because of the netcode issues and other bugs. Just when I thought it was safe to return, the invisible wall glitch materialised so I left it a good 6-7 months and upon returning, the game was slowly improving and when it was finally perfectly playable, every expansion had been released and there were over 80 weapons so it was a remarkable package overall. Battlefield Hardline was just lame and BF1 was pretty stable but just not for everyone. Battlefield V was another major disappointment - awful relationship brewed between the developers and community and we received a fairly broken game upon launch and with them spending a good year on fixing that, we missed out on several pre-planned expansions. BF2042 took the absolute biscuit though with so many staple features missing, conceptual woes and some really odd design choices. With all DICE's experience and research over the years, it just defies belief how they released it in such a state and the decisions they made. I just hope next time they can get it right day one rather than year one being a case of trying to get to square one.1 point -

I had the RPK gold way before the Icarus. I kept hearing how it was the best LMG. I don't personally have the level of success with the RPK that I do with the Icarus I think my K/D with the gun is around 1 while the Icarus is 2.1 so I clearly play much better with the Icarus. Not sure why but if it works, don't mess with it. I have even been bringing the Icarus in DMZ and it shreds those armored guys1 point -

The standards were pretty high in Quebec when I went. I don't think I would have succeeded as well as I did if not for them. The kids in the extended family all went to different schools, the latest to graduate was about 5 years ago. We have 2 accountants, 1 doctor, 1 biochemist, 1 dentist, 2 pharmacists, 1 architect, 1 engineer. So they must have been doing a reasonable job of it1 point -

Happy to play this for free on gamepass but is lacking a number of important features. Can't play solo and no crossplay between xbox and Steam. Shooting and movement feels good, if very similar to Vermintide. In fact it's essentially a very good reskin of the Verminite games but I'll wait for it to be finished before I consider spending any money and buying it.1 point -

Nothing new about this this. The warzone loot mode has the ballons to extract your cash. It would be nice to have in order to eliminate extraction camping. Since all teams know you have the case and were you are, extracting is dangerous and difficult. That would make that much more difficult for the opposing teams1 point -

Had a good night trucking yesterday. Earned about £35k though due to laon repayments, a few speeding tickets and a slight accident of rolling it and one with an immovable object I saw a net profit of about £6k 😆 Still, on Carl’s advice I took out the big loan, expanded my garage and now have 2 drivers for some passive income. They only earn about £1.5k a day for me but it’s creeping up as they gain experience. I think the next step for me is to do some truck upgrades or get a new truck as mineis painfully slow when towing heavy loads.1 point -

So I don't watch Soccer, sorry, I prefer HandEgg (US Football) to it, but I keep hearing mention of the Hillsborough 1989 disaster Looked it up; and DAMN also, apparently this happened a few days later as a sign of solidarity Four days after the Hillsborough disaster, in the European Cup semi-final between AC Milan v Real Madrid, the referee blew his whistle two minutes into the game to stop play and hold a minute's silence for those who lost their lives. Halfway through, AC Milan fans sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.1 point
