  1. Update time 🙂 Matt continues to work on his castle is (currently) the biggest build in the little FG village. Though Mike has started outlining a build on top of the hill next door. I think he said with the intention of maybe joining it in to Matt's castle which would make it a pretty big build. While the house on the hill which, I think, was built by James and Lee has also gained an extension of a tower. Jordie has decided to move a bit closer than his first base so has moored his Dreamboat on the river at the foot of Mike's work in progress The storage room has finally got an outside too, I decided to go with something that leaves no doubt as to what the building is for 😄 And lastly we've also gained a villager trading hall next door to the storage Currently it has 8 prisoners...I mean volunteers in captivity, 4 farmers to trade crops for emeralds one each for wheat, beetroot, potatoes and carrots. Though they all do melons and pumpkins which is the easiest as they're both can be farmed automatically. I've done some trading so we're starting to build up a supply of emeralds in the storage room. The other 4 are enchanted books and the sign above their heads tells you what each sells. I've also traded with them and left a supply of each book in the chests above their heads. Each villager has been zombified and cured so should be offering most things at a rate of 1 emerald. If the figure is higher it's because they've been traded with recently and if you wait a day or 2 in game their prices should come back down. Currently have trades for; Mending (armour and tools get repaired as you gain XP) Impaling 4 (I think there's an impaling 5 but two impaling 4 books can be combined should anyone want this) Looting 3 (Gives you better / more loot when killing passive or hostile mobs) Aqua Affinity (goes on your helmet and allows you mine faster under water) Fire Protection 4 (exactly what it says on the tin, protects you from fire so you take less damage if you're set on fire. Best combined with Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection but we don't have them yet) Infinity (goes on your bow and means you only need 1 arrow in your inventory to fire an infinite number of arrows) On the list still to get; Unbreaking 3 (tools and armour wear out slower) Efficiency 5 (tools mine quicker) Fortune 3 (get more drops when mining ores) Silk Touch (get the block you mine, stone won't turn in to cobblestone etc. and you can also mine glass and other breakable blocks) Sharpness (goes on sword or axe and increases damage) Protection (goes on your armour and does exactly what it says) Blast Protection (goes on your armour and does exactly what it says) Projective Protection (goes on your armour and also does what it says) Feather Falling (you can fall further without losing health or lose less health if you fall a long way) Respiration (Stay under water longer) Depth Strider (Move faster in water) Smite 5 (goes on your sword or axe and does extra damager to undead mobs; zombies, skeletons, drowned, wither skeletons and the wither boss) Knockback (goes on your sword and maybe your axe but knocks enemies back when you hit them - great for creepers as it can knock them out of exploding range) Fire Aspect (goes on your weapons and sets mobs on fire when you hit them) Flame (same as fire aspect above but for your bow) Power (goes on your bow and increases arrow damage) By my count that is 21 enchants so with 4 farmers, we will have 25 villagers. So while I think I've covered the important enchants, we have 7 slots spare if there's any you want that I have missed. Any spare slots at the end, I'll probably fill with tool/weapon smiths to save us always having use diamonds to make tools and weapons.

  4. Not in any order tips - and I completely agree with the NEVER to use standby option. It messes up with WiFi connections too when switched back on. Buy an external hard drive if you don't already - you store all your PS4 games on that and leave the few PS5 games you play on the internal. I'm not even looking at the SSD ones they will be compatible with soon as the prices are ridiculous. Unfortunately the internal storage is still far too small for days like these. Search the store for free PS5 upgrades - Mainly, the only way to see if a game you own and is installed as a free upgrade is via the store. Games like Destiny 2, Rainbow 6 and Valhalla have free upgrades - the full current list is here >> PS5 upgrades. The upgrades help visually but I think they are way worth it more for loading times more than anything else. Oh, and the Haptic Feedback in the controller too if it has that upgrade included! Recording voice chat for everyone - theres more places annoyingly you can mute yourself by accident on recordings or just in chat. Be careful on the controller as the small button that mutes your voice is easily pressed and superceds your own mic mute. Check settings to ensure voice is shared and also check when in a party that your voice is set to Always Allow on sharing. We miss so many funny moments cos we can't hear everyones voices. Saving screenshots and videos is now a couple of clicks - its very slick but a subtle change is being quick with the share button on teh controller and selecting then what you want to do. You can on teh fly save a 'quick video' and it offers to save last 30 seconds, 5 mins, 15 mins and so on rather than the last video which is as standard set to 60 mins. Favourite all your 'parties' - Especially all the FG ones! The friends screen defaults to parties and its quicker to see if someone is on mic in one. You can also now slice and dice what you mute....hence now no need to leave a party if you find people are sending messages into a huge party that has loads of us in! Inviting/Join people to games is done via party menu - Press PS button brings up the card view. You can then press on the names and invite to game straight via that way - and joinign can be quick that way too. Auto updates to games works better....for recent games - All the games you've recently played (left to right on the main menu) should auto check for updates every time you turn on the PS5. If you need a game updated from your library that has dropped off the recent list, i'd always suggest clicking Options and checking for Game Updates. Better than PS4 but sometimes can be a pain still but thats the world we live in now. Checking you open the right Game version - If you have the PS4 and PS5 version installed, before you start the game, press the Option button and 'Check Game Version'. Whichever is ticked will be the default one that opens for you every time. Some upgrades don't need teh disc to be in anymore! - Destiny 2 and Wreckfest PS5 versions don't need the disc to be in which is pretty decent tbh! If theres more i'll come back and share!

  5. The real difficulty in the market is the desire to meet demand quicker than ever before as the cultural society we live in today just does not want to wait for games or content any longer. This isn't just games btw, its everything. Its why we have Netflix and see series come out as one whole series so people can binge stuff. In some ways we are creating addiction with everything. In games you see this with Destiny for example, as people hate timegating, although it was once acceptable back in the day. People want it all straight away and binge all the content as quickly as they can. The irony of this is then they say "Where's the rest?" which for me is so contradictory. I remember reading some years back that it takes 6-7 years to make a top AAA game. The problem is that its too long to wait for that and a lot hangs in the balance on whether they'll make their money back on it. Remasters and remakes are the way they have gone to fill the void because its updating existing infrastructure without the extra energy and years putting into the design of a game as its already been made. Whilst we shouldn't continue to accept shoddy remakes and poor AAA releases (looking at you Anthem), I think we also need to take a long hard look at ourselves as gamers. We've become abit more dangerous in ourt requests and then very dismissive of games that come out or get updated with battle passes and seasons - in which I think is actually a good balance to the world. If a game has free to play elements and then says 'hey, if you like what you're playing, you can grab the battle pass/season to play more of it if you're having fun' then i think thats a perfect balance. Its not a Paywall. Its our choice. And ultimately the developers of some of these awesome games have to get paid somehow. Problem with all that I write is that i'm asking for the most fickle-ist of groups to open up and be more appreciative of the state of games in some aspects. And a Gamers, like football fans, etc, will largely remain in the instant reactive world. An unrealistic world where no one wins. Hope that was a decent 2p view 😄

    Humankind

So, it's the summer lull, or rather, I have zero motivation to do much work while everyone else is on holiday. Thus, I multi-tasked by playing a bit more of Humankind while also working on stuff for... work. I adjusted the game settings to mimic how I tend to play in Civ: infinite turns with the game ending if any of the objectives/situations happen, biggest map, 5 AIs, slowest progression setting. This changed the gameplay SO MUCH. It's actually more difficult, or at least that's how it seems to me. But, it also might be because of different AIs this time. I've gotten the hang of the manual battles, which makes such a huge difference. You can actually be weaker overall entering the battle but still win it if you play smart. This is actually what I enjoyed about Endless Legend. I'm trying to carefully balance out gaining influence and science. Production versus money. But, oddly enough, money doesn't seem to be an issue in Humankind, at least for me. It's all a balancing act. One that should bring about so much more different types of strategies and fun.

    UFL Football

Finally a new football game is in the works! F2P and with many licensed players. Could go either way but anything to give EA and Konami a kick up the backside as they’ve become way too comfortable and complacent for over a decade now and I can’t even remember the last alternative football game we had

  12. So, by now a good few people have PS5s, and even Xbox owners too. Do you have any "I wish I'd known this" or "I just found out that" tips or notes for other FGers or new or soon to be new console owners? Any gremlins? Any life hacks? If so, drop em below 🙂

  14. I'm definitely completely burnt out on deathmatch-type games now. I don't feel games like core COD have anywhere to go now with their peak of innovation and popularity already long-passed. This has also been echoed in its decline in the last decade - even with better tech and timescales, they never could reach the heights seen in the golden age from COD 4 to BO2. I really like sim games now as they are very relaxing and have come on considerably in the last decade. I don't like the current culture of MP games with skins, battle passes and microtransactions so I'm happy to be out of it. It's all very sweaty now. Battlefield 2042 will probably be the next and only MP game I play as it's never been a series to rip gamers off or be too childish but most multiplayer experiences now are just not much fun.

  15. I still play pretty much all the genres I used to, just now some more than others. I used to always play FPS and sports games, most of the time online. Now I'm more drawn to genres like simulation and strategy. The biggest change I've had is I simply just don't play multiplayer, I might have the odd times when I'll venture online but 90% of my time is now playing single player games.

  16. I used to absolutely love FPS games. I think I've burnt myself out on them for the most part. Specifically competitive type shooters like Call of Duty. I just can't get into them anymore.

  24. I have finished it already (platted), I really enjoy the gameplay loop, and also pretty much mastered the online. I'd say if you don't love the main game I wouldn't bother with the DLC, but if you do love it its definitely worth it. They are adding new content to the online soon as well for free called Rivals.

That is devastating and disgusting all in one. I'm not saying I wouldn't get my money's worth if you look at playtime alone for someone like me but I'd prefer not to pay £90 for the game we would all likely buy for far less once we wait for it to go down in price. Its like they don't want you to play with your friends. Incredible.

    Humankind

Nice review! I was worried it would be too close to Civ and be a bit jarring in that respect. I'll probably pick it up around Xmas time as I've booked holidays from work from 10 December unyil January and will have time for it. I played a bit of Civ 5 recently and I can't keep doing late nights and work the next day 😁

    Humankind

So, I dropped about 10 hours into this game, 1 completion. Just some thoughts on it: While I wanted this to really compete with Civilization, I think it has strong potential. I'm just not sure it's there yet. Don't get me wrong. I love Endless Legend, and I think it's a better game than the last two iterations of Civilization. However, Humankind (which has a lot from Endless Legend) seems to have dumb down some of the mechanics or gotten rid of them. I think it vastly improves upon a lot of what bores me in Civilization, currently (sorry, but Civ IV was still better than V or VI for me), but I think Sega and Amplitude worried too much about pulling in players from Civilization that they removed some of the more complex strategy points that Endless Legend had (heros/governors/spies, multiple step quests upon discovering items, complex issues when assimilating random villages). That's not to say that Humandkind is not a complex game. It definitely it. I think I went through half the game still trying to get certain parts of it down. As like the beta, you can't just "plop" cities down when you feel like it. There's a cost (influence/star cost) to it, and your empire has a limit on how many you can have based on your technology. This, along with pre-determined territory lines, does a fantastic job at controlling growth for a more competitive gameplay. So, what do you do when you want more territory but you're running low on influence because you want to bank some to properly manage your government? You figure out how to increase your influence fast enough with a random village, so you can assimilate them before someone else does. I thought this was pretty brilliant. But, I would have liked a little bit more complexity in the aftermath of that. There's the other fun part of empire axis stuff. Various basic lines of thinking that help you figure out your decisions as you need to make them. My empire actually became what reflects me the most: science driven (religion dead), tolerant/accepting of other cultures and ideas, morally driven before profit, eco-conscious. The choices you make in the game dictate that epilogue speech about your empire at the end. There are some "quality of life" items that I can see them adding as time goes on. Things from Civ that they could consider. Like adjusting how fast or slow a game progresses (how many turns) or actually giving me a mini-world map (if it's there, I haven't found it). Choosing how many civilizations you go up against. How big the world can be. Overall, it's a solid game. My own expectations were based on Endless Legend. So, Humankind came up short on that. However, the best and short way I can sum up this game... if you thought Civilization was like playing chess, then Humankind is like playing 3D chess. I'll definitely be playing this for a bit before I get into Ghost of Tsushima Directors Cut.

  30. Reminds me a lot of BF4. So much so, I'm currently reinstalling it plus all the dlc and community add ons. Honestly, "monkey see, monkey do" should be my gaming bio. The PC version of 2042 has been on sale green man gaming for £40 a couple of times but I've resisted pre-ordering so far.

  31. It's running the best I've ever seen it, so well in fact I keep jumping on late at night to do a few jobs. I noticed one specific bug that has been fixed that made me happy. I had to deliver some tungsten to Port Olisar. But when I went there I landed on the wrong strut. This is usually very annoying as you can't go inside and walk between struts, they're all self-contained. So you have to space walk to the other strut while carrying a crate. It used to be a 50% of dying when you land as the character would fall over and break his neck.... but I chanced it and now when you land, instead of falling over I landed very gracefully. Great qol improvement as i often make the mistake of not paying attention when I'm asking for permission to dock and end up in the wrong part of the space station. I'll be on a bit today and this week as I'm now at 250k and just 20k more to buy a dragonfly.

  32. DICE are keeping this to themselves for the time being, so all we know is as follows: Dataminer Temporyal has been through the recent Battlefield 2042 closed alpha and found references to persistent gear and permadeath, with Escape From Tarkov working something like a roguelike where if you die you lose all your equipment. There don’t seem to be any unique maps for the mode but Temporyal has found evidence of Orbital – the map from the technical test – having a specially modified version for Hazard Zone – which is likely to be true for other maps as well. Both Hunt: Showdown and Escape From Tarkov are PvEvP games, which means you fight both other player characters and computer controlled enemies. This appears to be the case for Hazard Zone as well, including Tarkov style boss characters. Uplink towers will allow you to call in help, like an ATV or robot dog, but enemies can also radio in for reinforcements. The goal of Hazard Zone seems to be collecting data from crashed satellites and other devices, although completing the mode appears to work more like The Division’s Dark Zone than it does Tarkov, with the ability to call in an evac helicopter.

  33. Have to say the new patch runs really really well. Smoothest it's ever been for me. No hitches or lag spikes. However, elevators are a bit dangerous, as I called one and walked through the doors when they opened and fell to my death as there was no elevator there. So yeah, watch out for that one. Also, if your ship has a bed, don't log out in it as you may have problems next time you try to enter. I found this out to my cost and it took a while before I discovered a workaround on the RSI forums.

  34. We haven't had a new GTA in what, eight years? Because online is a cash cow. But i suppose there is more choice now than ever and my goto games are rarely triple A. My most played games are all by indie developers, the only string is that they often spend a lot of time in early access.
    1 point
  35. Triple A games are becoming more and more predictable with each “new” release. It’s either the “Yearly update” (cod), remake of something old, Game as service, dark souls clone, or an open world sandbox/stealth/crafting etc etc. Not all are bad, but a lot of the gems are coming out of indie developers more and more mostly because they’re willing to take a chance at something different. Most of the AAA publishers won’t take a chance unless a name is associated with the product.

  37. No crossplay across generations - PS4 and XB1 can play together but those will be watered-down versions of the game with 64 players max. PC, PS5 and XBSX can all play together with the full 128 player experience. Current gen players cannot downgrade to play with old gen users and of course, old gen players cannot play with the latest consoles due to significant technical limitations.
