Hello & apologies for the late intro. I'm a new person on here, so here's a little bit about me.

I'm not a gamer at the moment, but I'm looking for a laptop with a high refresh rate as I think my brain doesn't like 60Hz and gives me banging headaches. I figured that gamers seem to be clued up on techno computer stuff so thought someone on here might be able to recommend a tried & tested budget gaming laptop as I don't really know where to start - so many to choose from. Having said that, if I'm getting a gaming laptop, then I'll probably start gaming .... hmmm

I'm into retro stuff and use an Atari for music production and I work as a violin teacher, so music is my main thingy.

Thanks to everyone who's helped and sent me links etc.  I particularly like crispymorgan's suggestion of an Etch a Sketch 😂🤣😂🤣

Bye for now ✌️

Nice one! I tortured my parents practicing violin for a year when I started secondary school....they were quietly relieved when I gave it up. Beautiful instrument when played by a pro...

I had an Atari STFM with a ram upgrade running cubase on a monchrome monitor alongside a Korg M1.  I'm using a Roland FA08 now with ableton live and sometimes cubase on my laptop, but mostly just enjoy playing live stuff and messing with the internal workstation features on the synth.  Bought a Korg krome, but sent it back because the the keys were terrible (my roland is weighted).  I also play drums in a band doing rock covers.  I'm really into retro synth stuff at the moment, as a result I'm pretty much the only person enjoying Muse's new album.  there is a music thread around here somewhere, feel free to drop in and post anything you have created.

Regarding Laptops, keep an eye on Hot UK Deals (google hukd)  it's where you'll find some good bargains.

Cheers Plumbers Crack ... love a bit of Grappelli.  I'm really crap at jazz though - its really difficult. I'm sure you weren't that bad at the violin ... it ALWAYS sounds bad for about the first 6 months because you have to learn to find the notes yourself (unlike piano, guitar etc.). Teaching beginners can be a bit painful, but usually worth it in the end.

Crispymorgan ... nice to know there's some producers on here! I didn't realise there was a music thread, so will have a little scout around.  Quite a few people seem to be going back to the reliable old Atari and hardware at the moment ... I think the Atari's timing and analogue sound can't be beat, but maybe that's just me because I'm a '90's kid (well, born in '70s). My set up at the moment is Atari 1040ST/Cubase v2.1, Roland JX-305, Akai S6000 sampler, Roland Vintage Synth & Novation A Station. I just bought the Roland GAIA, but regret that I sold my JP8000 years ago when skint. They're like rocking-horse **** now!

My dad was a jazz drummer, but doesn't play anymore and is sadly selling his kit. I tend to use chopped up loops for my drums as I'm really bad at creating my own drum patterns.

Thanks for the info. on Hot UK Deals ... will take a look. Still undecided what to get, but need to spend some time to find the right one.

Hello @MogwaiPower, welcome to FG.

While I couldn't name you any pieces, I love classical music and listen to a lot of Johann Sebastian Bach, and when out and about I usually listen to Classical F.M.  Violin is probably one of my favourite classical instruments, along side cello.  I'm opting to currently learn electric guitar for metal music mostly, and also the ability to use an amp with headphones and and not disturb others.

I like the Muse boys normally, but ‘Pressure ‘ is the only track doing it for me at the moment...I’m finding the rest a bit insipid

Welcome to FG @MogwaiPower! Hope you enjoy your stay - make sure you take a look around and get involved where you can/want to.

Fingers crossed you find a decent laptop soon. What games are you looking into playing?

Thanks for your welcomes all. @Spacedeck - have you heard the Bach Violin Sonatas & Partitas? The 'Chaconne' is one of the best and if you like the cello, check out the Elgar Cello Concerto played by Jaqueline du Pre. Also check out some of Arvo Part's stuff - 'Fratres' is pretty mad.  And Shostokovich if you like something a bit weirder. When I was a teenager, I was into metal & thrash metal ... moved onto techno, hard house & old skool later on, but appreciate all sorts of music (except Motown 😫 and Disco 💩). Good luck with the guitar - I had to practice violin in the bathroom so I didn't disturb the neighbours.

Haven't even thought about where to start with games ... was going to ask my nephew ... he's hooked on them. Any suggestions for a novice very welcome.

Welcome aboard @MogwaiPower, you're in a good company here, as most of the forum regulars love a bit of a fiddle.

Thanks also for proving me wrong:D

I'm listening to the first video and I'm sure I've heard another version before.  This is the thing that gets me about classical music.  There is so many different variations with all these long confusing names, different orchestras, composers etc.  Compared to other types of music, this is the hardest to actually understand. I second what @Plumbers Crack suggested and you give us all a classical music thread.  I'd love to hear your favourites or even the more obscure pieces you listen to.

@Spacedeck It really doesn't matter what version, orchestra etc. - the music is usually the same, just played very slightly differently by different players (i.e. different interpretations) if that makes sense.  There are different genres of classical music and they're based mainly on periods in time - medieval, baroque, classical, romantic, 20th century and modern. For example, Mozart is a classical composer, JS Bach is a baroque composer, Brahms is a romantic composer etc. etc.

When I get a bit of time, I'll do a beginners guide!
