Looking to put something together. Most likely from Overclockers as Dickums recommends them and they have finance and BNPL options.

 

- is it significantly (ie more than £100) cheaper to buy all the components and assemble myself (lol). Shouldnt be too difficult to put all the components into a frame and turn it on and install Windows?

 

- if yes, what specs should I go for ? I have no idea what ram and graphics cards motherboards to get etc

 

- if no, should I buy a decent PC and upgrade bits on it ? My thoughts are that you shouldn't really buy it if it needs new bits straight away anyway

 

- budget. Probably 1k max inc software and a decent monitor etc.

 

- happy to upgrade as and when it requires it but id rather it be able to run almost all games on atleast mid level settings for a few years.

 

- Probably need atleast 2 TB data storage as i have well over 1TB of downloaded files, music and photos that I have spread over a laptop and 2 external hard drives that I would like to back up properly.

 

-games i want to play. Basically all the games i haven't played on PC because i haven't had one for about a decade. If love to play the latest Total War and other RTS games on mid or high level graphics for once.

You want an i5, 16gb of RAM and a 1070 or 1070ti graphics card. The rest is gravy. PC hardware far, far outstrips the demand in most games nowadays apart from the usual "hurrr we maked a game which is so intense it'll kill your pc" games which have three levels.

Ok I will have a look. Is there an advantage to having a more expensive motherboard ? I need to check these are compatible right ? Or is compatibility not really an issue anymore ? What about AMD and Nvidia cards ? Am i right in thinking some motherboards cant take amd cards etc or is that bs ?

The only reason you may think of a heftier mobo is to get ready for a new chipset, new graphic card lifecycle. I don't think you should be worried about it right now. You're correct in that AMD/NVIDIA require their own mobos, heat sinks, etc.

The only reason you may think of a heftier mobo is to get ready for a new chipset, new graphic card lifecycle. I don't think you should be worried about it right now. You're correct in that AMD/NVIDIA require their own mobos, heat sinks, etc.

What's the difference between AMD and Nvidia ? Personal preference ?

I'm assuming you just plug all the components together and turn it on and whack a Windows installation CD into it ?

Nvidia are a better choice for the higher end GPUs but AMD give good CPU.

 

Rib's build there is pretty impressive, I didn't think it could be done with a monitor for a grand but he's proved me wrong.

Is there really any reason to pick AMD over Nvidia other than the reason Phil said ? I just want to be clear - If i pick one and want to switch for whatever reason, it requires a motherboard switch and to check compatibility between parts etc ?

Amd vs Nvidia = graphics cards. Any card will slot in any motherboard provided it has space, which it will unless you're an awkward fucker like Lee who has to have his PC made out of fucking origami.

 

Amd vs Intel = CPU choice. AMD = AMD motherboard, Intel = Intel motherboard. AMD is future compatible, Intel isn't.

I was wondering how the above "expert" advice would turn out when someone is saying an Intel CPU isn't good enough, but refers to NVIDIA (A graphics processor) as a Mother board component. 

 

I guess that would explain why Rizen performs better. People are using a GPU rather than a CPU 

 

 

 

Graphics cards usually use PCI express as their interface (which was invented by Intel BTW . ) that standard is pretty universal.  You can run into issues with the slot size. You want x16 and then you are golden. PCIE is downward compatible. So if you get a GEN4 PCIE card but you have a GEN2 motherboard you will be operating in Gen2 mode (is 1/4 of the speed) and you just wasted a ton of money. That would be the main reason to be aware of the motherboard capability

Can anyone give me a list of essential programs and "maintenance" actions e.g. anti virus software, do I need to run system clean ups and defragging etc ?

Going to install Windows 10 from a pen drive then purchase a CD IF I need it.

List of parts will help. For example, if your drive is HDD or SDD will have implications for clean up. CCleaner for example, is not recommended for SSDs.

In all seriousness, nice set up. If you can overclock the Ryzen beyond 3.4 you'll be laughing.

 

I didn't bother with antivirus for a long time and relied on Windows Defender. But then I've never used my gaming PC for accessing porn .

 

I have recently installed Avast, the free version. Some will tell you these antivirus applications are as bad as having malware, but I'm no expert.

 

I stopped using Ccleaner because two of my drives are SSD, only  one is HDD. As far as I can tell, Windows 10 is pretty good at cleaning up after itself but others on the forum with more know-how will probably guide you better...

I feel like most antivirus programs are a glorified virus. Just don't go clicking on things and adding weatherbug toolbars. Windows Defender should keep you right. Also awesome build, excited to see it in action!
