@GazzaGarratt for bicycles you want to go for a hybrid. But one with a large frame. I have a Specialized Crossroads which has lasted me 10 years so far. Although I've changed all of the parts at some point or other. Cycling every day means I need to change the chain and cogset every couple of years, brake blocks can be yearly. Once in a while I get a professional to service it as I'm only an amateur and some things, like greasing ballbearings, take me too long to do. But that's a once every 5 years type job. I cycle from Hackney to Barbican/St Paul's for work but I cycle for leisure too. There's a canal in Hackney which takes you to the river Lea and there's a whole section of east london green space around that way that many people don't know about, as even in summer its fairly peaceful. There's an old overgrown waterworks and bird sanctuary, plus hackney marshes to the north, and you almost feel like you're in the countryside. I hate walking but on a bike I feel magnificent.
