If I look back over the past few decades we've had some amazing film series with a few very large universes too, such as the Marvel Universe that had 20+ films and the Harry Potter one that had 8. I know we live in an era that is dominated by binging stuff, especially on services such as Netflix, Amazon, Disney, etc but i'm not really seeing anything on them like how the film series gripped me - and I miss that feeling a lot.

I'm just wondering because I never really hear about movies much lately (appreciate the COVID thing has put a hold on most of that) but does anyone know of future releases to get hyped and excited about? How does everyone else feel when things like Marvel, Harry Potter, etc finished? Sometimes gaps in films lead to that suspense building and I hope something is around to do just that soon.

The only thing I was looking forward to was maverick

Im not a massive fan of franchise film series, I have more time for watching stuff I'm not sure about or even heard of and being surprised by how good they can be. Over hyped for films usually leaves me somewhat disappointed tbh.

I don't even think Covid is to blame as the likes of Hollywood and TV networks were long going downhill before this started. The coronavrius situation has merely given them an excuse to use and even more challenges going forward.

There doesn't seem to be any originality these days so production companies are having to milk famous and historic brands as a framework like Star Wars. There is an over-reliance on special effects so good old fashioned narrative pieces take a backseat plus there is also the mentality that big-budgets equate to quality. Maybe if companies weren't pumping in outlandish sums then there wouldn't be such panic to get a huge return. A lot of big named actors are overpaid beyond comprehension now and many newcomers just seem to plain and uninspired.

Despite the amount of choice we have to watch such things, quality seems spread thin and I really don't know if there will be any top-end franchises coming to fruition anytime soon. Even the Walking Dead is still being milked to death! There's better quality coming out of low-budget foreign films in all honesty.

Well, I was looking forward to the adaptation of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World but apparently it's just another excuse to do some soft porn. Seems our age can't handle deep thought.

I hear they're turning Warhammer 40K into celluloid or possibly its Netflix, and I'm interested to see how they'll get tits in that too😅

Doesn't sound like much on the horizon then apart from the usual pull towards new tv series/documentaries on Netflix.

Maybe franchises suck in the easy watchers of this world, but I remember how much ype and fun it was thinking what will happen in the next film in the Marvel series and because I hadn't read the Potter books, what would happen next in the films. I think the latest movie in a series was Angel Has Fallen which was a very underrated trilogy imo.

I know Marvel Phase 4 is abit away but here's hoping they can generate some positive buzz when we get nearer the first film release (I haven't a clue when that is either)

Bit like you mate I have enjoyed the marvel universe coming to film even though I’ve never read a comic, loved the Lord of the rings franchise as well yet never interested in the potter world. The Bourne franchise had been a nice change from the Bond and mission impossible worlds even if they did completely go off track from the book after the first 30 mins.
As for one coming next I’m unsure to be honest. The DC universe has been a huge let down for what it could have been so far. Guessing it will be from a noteable book series as they all tend to be from nowadays.

I'm really hoping Nathan Fillion can save the DC films. However, he may be a baddie which I ain't too sure how that'll go down.

Aqua man was a good rebound after Batman vs superman and dawn of justice which were just wholesale clusterfucks of what they could have been. Wonderwoman was quite good as well and I will say I actually really liked man of steel and Henry Cavill as Superman.

All that being said will they just shelf all of the above say they went to a parallel dimension to explain why there’s a new Batman after the wonderwoman 80s film coming out?

I just feel they start off with some good decisions e.g. casting of Superman but then they lose him too easily. Batman vs Superman should've been an absolute iconic film but it fell flat so trusting the next director decisions, even if they spin off and potentially reboot some films or series, would be hard to do right now.

Just having a look at a few of the newer films slated to come out next year and looks like they are re-doing tomb raider franchise, starting an uncharted franchise (male tomb raider), Mortal Kombat could potentially produce a lot of films as could Godzilla if they go through the monsterverse, DC are doing more villain/anti hero films with Morbius venom 2 and a suicide squad reboot, and if marvel can sort it out, the xmen universe could be a big one if done properly. Main one that people keep talking as the next big franchise though is pokemon, and I have next to fuck-all interest in that.

If they're doing this they have to top Angelina Jolie as Tomb Raider, even if they weren't top notch films.

Always felt if they backed this franchise with money this would be pretty huge. The original films are not what you'd hope for (even though I still like them cos they're a super easy & corny watch)

I thought they already did that with Alicia Vikander?
