uberwarrior 373
Is basically a complete ball ache. You get 5 minutes of actual programme and the same again with commercials. It's even worse than watching Champions League coverage on ITV in the UK. Don't get me wrong, it's great that I can watch the shows I like but just as you're getting into the programme you have a commercial break that just seems to go on forever. I guess the guys who live here are used to it, but still wouldn't mind getting opinions on it. If you ignore the build up and make a drink, etc at half time you don't get any commercials! Commander_Undies 618
I usually mute the commercials and do something else while the show isn't on. So usually I try and multitask when I want to watch a show. While we all say we are used to it, we still bitch when we are into a show and all they play is commercials. I gave up watching Big Bang Theory, I'll watch it commercial free online. 30 minute shows are horrible. uberwarrior 373
If you ignore the build up and make a drink, etc at half time you don't get any commercials! Yeah I know Dave, they don't break up the actual game with commercials, more then their lives are worth, but the build up, half time and directly after just gets on my wick! Basically I never enjoy football coverage on ITV not just for the amount of adverts but some of the idiots they have on there as presenters pundits etc....... Sennex 1,903
This is why over a year ago I finally got rid of cable and went to streaming everything. Other than on Hulu I haven't see a commercial in a year and a half. Luke 23:34 'And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they don't think it be like it is, but it do." kylebees 242
First, where in the US are you Mark? Because if you're anywhere near New York, I'm going to find your ass!!! Second, commercials are what DVR's were made for. Very rarely do I watch a show live. I either have it recorded or I'll pause the show for a while and then go back and watch it, just so I can fast forward through the commercials. Last, if it weren't for those commercials, none of these TV stations would be around. I still don't want them but I understand why they're there. I know what you're saying Kyle and I understand that these channels need commercials it's just that I'm used to the frequency and length of the commercial breaks. Typically, for the main commercial channels in the UK you get the best part of 15 minutes of actual programme to watch before you get a break, which is fine with me, allows us Brits to go and make a cuppa I'm in West Michigan my friend, not a short trip for either of us I think. I've got another 2 weeks before I leave out for the relative warmth of home Link to comment https://forevergaming.co.uk/forum/forums/topic/2296-watching-tv-in-the-us/#findComment-55807 Share on other sites
deterioration 443
It depends on the channel. Also there are a lot of tricks being used like speeding up syndicated shows to make them shorter to add more commercials. Sounds to me like you're watching Discovery or something like that who goes to commercial 30 seconds after having gone to commercial. I can't watch things like that. Then they play the same 5 commercials and I want to break something. uberwarrior 373
I'm sort of restricted to what's on offer at the hotel in a way, it's not a big deal as such just found it a bit frustrating at times. cyberninja2601 1,106
Most networks have a streaming option, so people who don't what to watch immediately and don't want the commercials simply stream it. PVR is the other options. I know that it doesn't work out that way when traveling. That's what all those pron channels are for Link to comment https://forevergaming.co.uk/forum/forums/topic/2296-watching-tv-in-the-us/#findComment-55862 Share on other sites
ChaosGladiator 811
This was probably what I disliked the most when I went to the US. Say Mark, seen any Kia commercials at all? They were on every commercial break atleast twice when I was there. Fucking rediculous. I don't see how you guys handle it, only taste I ever get of US tv these days are the Superbowl when they send it. Oh they made a pass! Aaaaaand commercial. Some dude ran 10 yards! Commercial. I pretty much streamed everything when I was there, like others have said. jordie1892 681
I was amazed when I went to L.A that after a program finished there would be adverts, followed by the credits and then adverts again. I don't know how I'd cope without Sky + and Netflix. uberwarrior 373
Bees want to find your ass.... Hmmm. Keep it behind closed doors fellas I know scary isn't it! @Sebba, no the Kia ad's don't seem to be as regular these days, but the viagra commercials are a laugh. The other ones that I find really funny are for pharmaceutical products, more time is spent telling you of the side effects than selling the actual product, talk about cover your arse. Anyway, the best thing is that I have found a channel that shows live PL games, watched 3 back to back last weekend, never get to do that at home. Just watching West Ham v Palace right now, Man U v Sunderland next.........saves me sitting here working instead. Just Tivo them and watch them later when I have time and as a bonus I can FF through commercials. You do get use to it though, and honestly it's not all that bad. For us middle age guys like us Mark it gives us a chance to get up and take a wizz every 15 minutes or go grab a pop or snack etc etc. Link to comment https://forevergaming.co.uk/forum/forums/topic/2296-watching-tv-in-the-us/#findComment-55887 Share on other sites
McNasty 260
So when yall watch soccer on tv, there are commercials during the game? We get to watch the full 90 minutes without commercials except during halftime. Premier league has gotten pretty popular here, I watch 2-3 games a week at least. Putting on commercials during a a game would lead to someone's head on a platter. J4MES OX4D 10,033
Talking of commercials; I missed a program the other week and had to watch it on ITV player and I had 3 minutes 30 seconds of adverts before it even started and then about 11 minutes of adverts on top throughout I watch a few US programmes and you can tell some have really horrible commercial breaks in between from the get-go all the way through. It's really noticable when the edited ones hit our TV's here because after a few minutes it says 'coming next' and then continues immediately whilst repeating what happened moments before because in the US; there would have been a break sandwiched in the middle. deterioration 443
Play video games, no commercials. Problem solved. Excellent idea but SHHHHHHHH! Don't give EA any ideas! Next they'll be putting pay to win/pay to progress microtransaction advert breaks between levels. Those will work day 1 but the game(s) wont. I watch a few US programmes and you can tell some have really horrible commercial breaks in between from the get-go all the way through. It's really noticable when the edited ones hit our TV's here because after a few minutes it says 'coming next' and then continues immediately whilst repeating what happened moments before because in the US; there would have been a break sandwiched in the middle. The run time averages are pretty consistent throughout A-'merican TV. A 30 minute show is normally 20-24 minutes and an hour show is normally 40-45 minutes. The rest is commercials. The way they cram them in does mess the flow up at times. You definitely spoil yourself and start noticing the annoying patterns by watching TV with no commercials. Some shows, like Elementary, cut to black before a commercial break. The show is great at using this technique to eat up show time. It's very noticeable when they change the lengths of the blackouts. Heres the supporting story for what I was typing about earlier: Fast forward: Networks speed up TV shows to play more ads Link to comment https://forevergaming.co.uk/forum/forums/topic/2296-watching-tv-in-the-us/#findComment-56370 Share on other sites
