Well I went against my initial thoughts from the beta and picked this up (at a huge discount of course) and thought I'd share some early opinions.

This game looks and feels dated, the mechanics are clunky and frustrating at times and the general netcode makes BF4's launch look epic. This is nowhere near the standard that Ubisoft presented it which is of no surprise. Despite these flaws; there is some fun to be had here but you have to keep your expectations very low indeed. If you can get over the sloppy and lackluster execution; this isn't a bad tactical game especially when you are playing with fellow players who have the capacity to understand how this game should be played.

It's predominately a MP 5v5 hostage rescue or bomb defusal game although there are some single player elements mostly consisting of the same thing either through matchmaking or lone wolf where you undertake a mission single handily. The game revolves around Reown points which is like exp and you can unlock operators which each have their own range of specialist equipment and loadouts to unlock and choose from. You can earn this in the single player modes solo or in a team against the AI or you can rank up and gather more Reown from playing casual MP which pits 5v5 full MP. Matches are best of 5 with alternating ends of attack and defend and you can select the appropriate operators for the job in hand on the various maps. The maps are reasonable and the objective points change in each round to keep it challenging. The attack team has to locate intel on the bombs/hostages in the prep phase and the defenders have to secure their objective positions by laying out traps and barricades - each operator has different equipment on offer whether you attack or defend and each player on the team can only choose one specific role that they've unlocked. This means each side and player is equipped differently and it keeps everything interesting.

Attack teams can blast walls, repel to the roof and enter via windows and attempt to secure the objective through a variety of means. Defenders can utilise their equipment depending on the operators in the team by creating additional barricades, bulletproof blocks and a range of traps. The matches can be a bit messy and if you're on a clueless team; it can be embarrassing, annoying and a lost cause but aside from that; some games can be really dramatic and make everyone think and work hard to secure the objective and win the round.

The movement and gun mechanics are ropey to say the least - it feels like Ubisoft wanted to create some realism of lumping a fully kitted-out operator and making them work for kills but it's just been conveyed in a messy and cumbersome way that it feels dated and awkward. It's good that it's not simplistic like COD but the execution is questionable especially with some dreadful bullet detection and the general netcode. The AI also for the single player aspect is some of the worst I've ever encountered but it makes way for some hilarious but cringeworthy killcams.

Competitive mode unlocks at level 20 and I'm 7 so far but I will update in due course if I make it that far. So far though; not bad but not great and certainly not worth it at fully price. If you can overlook the woes and find some others to play with; there is fun to be had. Not the worst game Ubisoft have released in recent times either...

In the beta the controls felt a lot like the Payday 2 controls, just seems to be something about the shooting and movement that feels off.

But I did keep playing for some reason, maybe because the rounds are short or when playing with people who know what they're doing and work together there i s a certain kind of enjoyable tension.

So I watch CohhCarnage play it today and I was really impressed. It's tactical and a bit slower paced which is my style of FPS. I may pick this up.

I picked it up for XBO and holy cow this game is wonderful. I have a strong dislike for call of duty as far as game style and pace so it's unfair for me to compare.

But this game is wonderfully polished and fun.

still looking for a game to grab my time.  this is cheaper on PSN so might pick it up.

Slow, methodical, very team dependent tactical shooter. No major bugs outside of a sluggish matchmaking system at times. Wonderful game and I recommend anyone to grab it. I would consider buying it on PSN also if y'all did. To be Call of Duty and the twitchy bullshit shooters can't hold a candle to this game.

I have to ask, would you consider BF3/4 to be a twitchy shooter?

Or Destiny?

At times I don't, but then there are times when I do for all three, I am really torn. I prefer the different playstyle of Battlefield over CoD, and would like to explore that more with folks. But I am like the only one that really enjoys it.

If this is more like BF then I would be interested in picking it up

Luke 23:34
'And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they don't think it be like it is, but it do."

So a "twitch shooter." They're not about strategy and pattern memorization. It's all quick reflexes and instinct.

Battlefield and Destiny are in this weird middle ground I believe, obviously it depends on the game type. The scale of Battlefield would make it appear to be the least twitchy out of them all and you have to include vehicles. The use of sniper rifles and long range gear is also a good indication to me on how twitchy a game is. Call of Duty is without a doubt a twitch shooter in my eyes.

Bart, pick a time and I will stream the game for you. Slow and steady is the name of the game and you often see cod and destiny players struggle badly.

There's ambushes, choke points, recon drones and security cams in Rainbow 6: Siege. You can't run into an area, you'll be killed almost instantly and never see where it came from.

Edit in yellow, I needed to reword it on my laptop rather than mobile

I will see what is going on in my house tonight, but most likely it will be this weekend.

Would I watch this on Twitch? or youtube or what?

(Other than How to Raid, or Minecraft how to build guides, I don't watch game streaming)

In your opinion ;)

I prefer bullshit twitchy shooters to realistic sneaking about looking for something to do its why I've always hated stealthy gameplay.

However I became a big fan of battlefield during bf4 but tbh I was more drawn to the domination non vehicle small map game mode for the same reason even though now and again the whole conquest large was epic to play.

Disagree with your twitch shooter definition . It is about reflexes but knowing what routes to take and flanks is what makes a decent player good in games like CoD. Play search and destroy and you will see what I mean.

I loved the Conquest Large maps; played it pretty much exclusively in BF4.

Sadly, now in the game no one works together to achieve any sort of goal, and they have nerfed Igla's and Stingers into being pointless without a group.

EDIT: Oh and Rob, I agree with you about the Yellow editted text.

Twitch Shooter: any game in which faster reflexes and better coordination almost invariably results in victory over another player when squaring off in an even showdown style gunfight. Non twitch shooters generally allow the slower player a chance to escape or enough time to win with wits such as throwing C4, pulling out a shotgun, popping a super, etc.

TL;DR

Twitch shooter has significantly faster TTK.

If you decide to put your dick in crazy, be ready to change your phone number and relocate.

BF4 and the DLC are available in the PS store for £15 all in. Even though I play it on PC (for the ass wiggles of course) I just couldn't resist.

Everything is twitchy for me to be fair.....but that's me, I'm twitchy.

I've watched a few streams, and I have to say it looks exactly the kind of pace I like.  Cod for me represents the worst of online gaming.  It's so fast that connection speed differences are magnified.  You can keep running running jumping and do a 360 with a sniper and win.  Fuck that,  I want to plan a infiltration and execute it.

Get it got people.  :D

I really want to play more BF4 now

I will check this out though

I have to say, I don't know why I didn't own this game from day one.  A proper tactical shooter that requires restraint and aggression in equal measures.  Not played with a squad yet, but clearing the killing house was a shit tonne of fun.
