I'm starting this post just as a stake in the ground. Calling it Drifters Den, what it will be is a place for me to piss , moan, whine and complain about all you damn kids that step on my lawn. Seriously though, wont be that, but will be a place just to blow off steam and talk about shit is all. And maybe even share some life wisdom with you damn kids. Just startin this now, we'll get more into why I hate all you damn young punks tomorrow And stay the hell off my lawn, damn punks.5 points

Link to the original: http://imgur.com/gallery/9qERv (Jet Porn behind each Spoiler Tag) There were a lot of things we couldn't do in an SR-71, but we were the fastest guys on the block and loved reminding our fellow aviators of this fact. People often asked us if, because of this fact, it was fun to fly the jet. Fun would not be the first word I would use to describe flying this plane—intense, maybe, even cerebral. But there was one day in our Sled experience when we would have to say that it was pure fun to be the fastest guys out there, at least for a moment. It occurred when Walt and I were flying our final training sortie. We needed 100 hours in the jet to complete our training and attain Mission Ready status. Somewhere over Colorado we had passed the century mark. We had made the turn in Arizona and the jet was performing flawlessly. My gauges were wired in the front seat and we were starting to feel pretty good about ourselves, not only because we would soon be flying real missions but because we had gained a great deal of confidence in the plane in the past ten months. Ripping across the barren deserts 80,000 feet below us, I could already see the coast of California from the Arizona border. I was, finally, after many humbling months of simulators and study, ahead of the jet. I was beginning to feel a bit sorry for Walter in the back seat. There he was, with no really good view of the incredible sights before us, tasked with monitoring four different radios. This was good practice for him for when we began flying real missions, when a priority transmission from headquarters could be vital. It had been difficult, too, for me to relinquish control of the radios, as during my entire flying career I had controlled my own transmissions. But it was part of the division of duties in this plane and I had adjusted to it. I still insisted on talking on the radio while we were on the ground, however. Walt was so good at many things, but he couldn't match my expertise at sounding smooth on the radios, a skill that had been honed sharply with years in fighter squadrons where the slightest radio miscue was grounds for beheading. He understood that and allowed me that luxury. Just to get a sense of what Walt had to contend with, I pulled the radio toggle switches and monitored the frequencies along with him. The predominant radio chatter was from Los Angeles Center, far below us, controlling daily traffic in their sector. While they had us on their scope (albeit briefly), we were in uncontrolled airspace and normally would not talk to them unless we needed to descend into their airspace. We listened as the shaky voice of a lone Cessna pilot who asked Center for a read-out of his ground speed. Center replied: "November Charlie 175, I'm showing you at ninety knots on the ground." Now the thing to understand about Center controllers, was that whether they were talking to a rookie pilot in a Cessna, or to Air Force One, they always spoke in the exact same, calm, deep, professional tone that made one feel important. I referred to it as the "Houston Center voice." I have always felt that after years of seeing documentaries on this country's space program and listening to the calm and distinct voice of the Houston controllers, that all other controllers since then wanted to sound like that and that they basically did. And it didn't matter what sector of the country we would be flying in, it always seemed like the same guy was talking. Over the years that tone of voice had become somewhat of a comforting sound to pilots everywhere. Conversely, over the years, pilots always wanted to ensure that, when transmitting, they sounded like Chuck Yeager, or at least like John Wayne. Better to die than sound bad on the radios. Just moments after the Cessna's inquiry, a Twin Beech piped up on frequency, in a rather superior tone, asking for his ground speed in Beech. "I have you at one hundred and twenty-five knots of ground speed." Boy, I thought, the Beechcraft really must think he is dazzling his Cessna brethren. Then out of the blue, a navy F-18 pilot out of NAS Lemoore came up on frequency. You knew right away it was a Navy jock because he sounded very cool on the radios. "Center, Dusty 52 ground speed check." Before Center could reply, I'm thinking to myself, hey, Dusty 52 has a ground speed indicator in that million-dollar cockpit, so why is he asking Center for a read-out? Then I got it, ol' Dusty here is making sure that every bug smasher from Mount Whitney to the Mojave knows what true speed is. He's the fastest dude in the valley today, and he just wants everyone to know how much fun he is having in his new Hornet. And the reply, always with that same, calm, voice, with more distinct alliteration than emotion: "Dusty 52, Center, we have you at 620 on the ground." And I thought to myself, is this a ripe situation, or what? As my hand instinctively reached for the mic button, I had to remind myself that Walt was in control of the radios. Still, I thought, it must be done—in mere seconds we'll be out of the sector and the opportunity will be lost. That Hornet must die, and die now. I thought about all of our Sim training and how important it was that we developed well as a crew and knew that to jump in on the radios now would destroy the integrity of all that we had worked toward becoming. I was torn. Somewhere, 13 miles above Arizona, there was a pilot screaming inside his space helmet. Then, I heard it—the click of the mic button from the back seat. That was the very moment that I knew Walter and I had become a crew. Very professionally, and with no emotion, Walter spoke: "Los Angeles Center, Aspen 20, can you give us a ground speed check?" There was no hesitation, and the replay came as if was an everyday request. "Aspen 20, I show you at one thousand eight hundred and forty-two knots, across the ground." I think it was the forty-two knots that I liked the best, so accurate and proud was Center to deliver that information without hesitation, and you just knew he was smiling. But the precise point at which I knew that Walt and I were going to be really good friends for a long time was when he keyed the mic once again to say, in his most fighter-pilot-like voice: "Ah, Center, much thanks, we're showing closer to nineteen hundred on the money." For a moment Walter was a god. And we finally heard a little crack in the armor of the Houston Center voice, when L.A. came back with, "Roger that Aspen. Your equipment is probably more accurate than ours. You boys have a good one." It all had lasted for just moments, but in that short, memorable sprint across the southwest, the Navy had been flamed, all mortal airplanes on freq were forced to bow before the King of Speed, and more importantly, Walter and I had crossed the threshold of being a crew. A fine day's work. We never heard another transmission on that frequency all the way to the coast. For just one day, it truly was fun being the fastest guys out. 11-year old Brony attempts suicide after being bullied

Carrying on from what Datte has said, the pure size of social media has resulted in cyber bullying being the main form of bullying. It is rarely the physical bullying it used to be, at least in my experience, but much more personal. People often say that the child can just turn off their social media, which I agree with in some aspects, but that is basically giving up; letting the bully change who you are. With that being said I have been lucky and have never really been bullied in my life. Of course there have been occasional things but those have been one-offs. Even within my school I do not see very much bullying at all; of course that could just speak volumes for the case that the children who are being bullied become isolated and alone. We can all say things like "toughen up" or "they are just over-reacting" but I think we must realise how alone and depressed you must be to seriously consider committing suicide. Also with what Drifter has been saying, although I believe in standing up for yourself, with cyber bullying it is never generally a sole bully or a few bullies picking on you. It is often just one person starting it and, all of a sudden, the whole of the school is talking about you. So calling a bully out and fighting them is hard when it is large groups of people that are doing the damage.3 points -

SHOULD NOT BE REMADE! This was thought of thanks to the 22 Jump Street thread here. My first opinions are that I thought the original 21 Jump Street series was brilliant, my friend's brother had some on VHS xD I also really really enjoyed the film adaption just recently. I stand firm to my beliefs though that remakes shouldn't happen. Yes we get the dinger every now and then but we also get shit loads of shit films that are just shit. I hate that shit. I wasn't alive when the originals to most of these films first premiered but I still saw them first as a child. Classics should not be remade. I hear they're doing a new (Monty Python's) Life of Brian. Why? It's such a good film. It makes me laugh so hard to this day and they're going to butcher it? Robocop? Yeah it looks good on the action front but they're killing the story. I rambled on a bit but what are your theories? Should classics get remade? PS. Superhero films are a different thread. They are new starts to different comics (I think) I agree to these but not if they're too recent. Spiderman and Batman (to an extent) spring to mind.2 points -

There are ways to present every viewpoint in a respectful manner. I didn't see what you wrote, but if Dids edited it, I'm left to assume that it was unnecessarily antagonistic. I don't think there's anything here specific to Brony's; why the kid was bullied is irrelevant. If a bully wants to bully you, he'll find a reason. Some people are more emotionally equipped to deal with it than others. The simple fact of the matter is that not all people have the same tolerance for suffering. I don't like this particular story simply because it serves to further sensationalize the 'brony' phenomenon. Because, well, it isn't. It's nothing. It's just people who like a show. By calling themselves bronies, it somehow takes on greater meaning and contributes to their own separation from what is considered 'normal'. This has two effects. On the one hand, people who label themselves as such feel a bond with each other, feel like they are part of something, feel like they are a little bit different and special. On the other, people see the label and because it's not something they understand or are a part of, they ridicule it. As far as I'm concerned it's a cartoon with a positive message, it's well written and well done. It's geared towards girls, sure, but it's message is universal and not at all gender specific. Some males young and old like it, some don't. Some girls like GIJoe, some don't. Whatever, who the fuck cares. I loved nothing more than the Joy of Painting with Bob Ross. No one is defined by the shows they watch, unless it's child p0nr or something equally heinous. As for the broader topic of bullying, it has gone on forever, but that doesn't make it right. At the most basic human level, most of us know right from wrong. When you see a tough guy, picking on a weaker kid for his own amusement, it's fucking wrong. Don't tell the victim he needs to toughen up, pick the ass hat up and slam him on the ground.2 points -

2 proud moments today. First it was nothing to do with the game but... Wait for it... A random member of the community! I know right! I was capping a flag, ran to a corner, turned around and a team mate had trapped me. He turned around and noticed me so he moved a little so I could get out, proud moment. Second was on the resort map. Shit load of dickhead enemy's camping on the roof watching the elevators. I get a chopper, parachute on the roof, 8 campers eat lead! Unfortunately a team mate got a kill and split my feed 5-3 but a proud moment indeed.2 points -

I'm seeing quite a few rumours on the circuit that suggest Sledgehammer games will be making the next Call of Duty game meaning the franchise will adopt a three year development rotation. If true, this will essentially give the developers a 3 year development window. I think 36 months should be the standard development timeframe for games within Call of Duty and it is a pity they didn't opt for this sooner even with just IW and Treyarch on their books. Then again; there is no way Activision would miss out on hundreds of millions in bunce just for the sake of product quality So it looks like we'll be lumbered with X amount of years of annual COD games and all the crap that comes with it. The rumuor mill also suggests that Modern Warfare 4 may be the game to introduce Sledgehammer to the crows nest. Assuming this isn't bollocks; I am glad Treyarch have an extra year to prepare what could be Black Ops 3. I think they did incredibly well with BO2 with the features, modes, gameplay elements and superb presentation in contrast to the original Black Ops which also impressed but was ultimately dated.1 point -
*nostalgic sigh* Not to mention that the Thing was an actual presence in the 80's version. A puppet, yes, but a physical presence nonetheless. Nowadays, people have to pretend that something is actually there. Also, movie makers use CGI for EVERYTHING nowadays. It's like they use CGI to get away with laziness. "We need an alien? F*ck the make-up, send some sketches over to the boys at SFX. Backdrop? Pfft, CGI!" Sad. That being said... It was pretty cool seeing some of the things implied in the 80's version of The Thing seen in the 2011. EDIT: "Hey, f*ck YOU, Plamer!"1 point

I think I remember that I haven't played it in a long while. I should install it... The CGI tricks used are inferior to the OG solutions IMO. Tricks like making things blurry, grainy, using quick camera cuts so you never get a focused look at the CGI, etc. When your confronted with the old monsters they are believable. The new ones its like meh run from the guy in the green suit holding a thing arm on a stick. Terrifying! I do like the new one it's just lacks the craftsmanship and believability of the classic. Well, let me put it to you like this. In 1989 my middle school had a school shooting. A literally cracked out idiot drove up in the bus turn around, fired a deer rifle at the kids outside until the rifle was empty, and then drove off. I was on the playground and was one of the kids he was shooting at. He was apprehended by police later in the day. No one was hit or hurt. Did you ever hear that story before today? Not unless you read the Courier-Journal, which ran a small article in the local section. Broadcast news, even local, never touched it. Do you think if the same thing occurred to day it might made the media? Look, in 1980 the media wasn't what it is today. There was no Twitter, no Facebook, etc. to spread these local only stories while they are still fresh and interesting. The media actually learns about a lot of these stories from social media these days, which wasn't an option in the '80s. The AP certainly didn't send a reporter to or transmit every single story of local interest only over the wire. News was more valued than it is now, because there was limited space to broadcast it. There were only so many minutes in a news program or pages in a paper. The Internet and constant broadcast news channels have cheapened that, the space is now basically infinite. I will say I'm not a media expert. I do know someone who is, though. A buddy of mine in his 60s has worked for Kentucky News Network for decades. KNN doesn't broadcast news on their own, they are a clearinghouse. They get stories off the wire (and now the Internet) and feed them to local radio channels for their DJ's to read on air and for their short news broadcasts. I'll ask him what he thinks about this debate.1 point -

I'd love to see World at War 2 or something. A COD game from a real era and not some dumbed-down fantasty title aimed at the younger gamer. Call of Duty used to be a serious shooter back in the day and I hope that Treyarch can take it back to its roots. WAW had the best maps in the series, best design, no quickscope nonsense or petty politics like we get today. It was a solid MP game; not overly-spectacular with ludicrous killstreaks but the core gameplay was memorable and enjoyable.1 point -

Firstly I agree only because remakes/prequels/reboots/whatever are hardly a substitute for the originals. In my mind they hold no actual value other than selling merch. I've griped about it and the lack of new material vs cramming old ideas with a new angle down our throats in the past. Not a fan; there are exceptions but very few. Fans have been waiting for a new The Thing movie for ages. There are many scripts and conceptional work from companies that have been ignored. A prequel of a remake was never called for. No one cares what happened at the Norwegian camp. It is touched on perfectly in JC's adaptation. I'm more interested if MacReady or Child's are a thing, if they froze, how it would have spread from there, on and on. On top of that the CGI vs the "originals" practical effects is terrible. It definitely did go backwards in every way.1 point -

News tended to stay more local in those days. You didn't have 24 hour news channels who needed to fill their air time so they showed stuff from all over the country to everyone all over the country. It loses context, because all news is reported like its local news. Take the 'knock out game' coverage. Every news cast made it sound like it was an imminent danger to YOU THE VIEWER, regardless of the fact it happened six states away and your state never had a single confirmed instance of it. The media is also much more savvy about what people will watch, and its all about ratings. "If it bleeds, it leads" is too simplistic now. They know what will generate maximum outrage, which generates maximum exposure.1 point -

I totally agree Cal. The majority of remakes usually fail pretty badly because they are taking something that people saw earlier in their lives and enjoyed and they are redoing it which takes away from the enjoyment for a couple reasons. 1- If you enjoyed it as a kid or earlier in life then even if you say you wont compare it to the original, you know damn well that you can't help but to do so, and originals are almost always the best because it is brand new to you. 2- There are just flat out certain movies that SHOULD NOT BE FUCKED WITH. Couple that come to mind that should not be / shouldn't have been messed with.... Star Wars, Rocky, ET, Red Dawn, Robo Cop, Mad Max, The Goonies, Karate Kid, Top Gun, Predator, Footlose, Rambo, Terminator, Gone with the wind, Casablanca, Taxi driver, Scarface, Platoon... Those are movies that were big in the day and to anyone that grew up during that time they are classic you just don't fuck with. I think Hollywood needs to stop taking what they view as the easy way out (remakes) and do what they should be doing and come up with new movie ideas rather than use the script from an existing movie and just switch it up a bit to try to cash in on an easy dollar.1 point -

I understand, but that's also my point though to a certain extent. My point was that back when I was younger kids were bullied as well back then, but they never tried to kill themselves or hurt themselves in any way. And that's what I am getting at. I don't mean this in an ill manner or to insult you or anyone else Dattebayo because you know I like you your a pretty good dude so please don't take this the wrong way but I just don't know how else to say this than to just say it like this.... These days it seems kids that are bullied just automatically hang their head in shame and get all emotional and depressed and then start doing things like cutting themselves or trying to kill themselves. Back when I was a kid it someone bullied you then you didn't get all emotional and depressed, you called that F'er out and you had a fight and kicked his ass and normally that would be the last time he would bother you after that. And if he ended up kicking your ass then usually he would still stop bothering you because even though you lost you earned his respect for standing up to him. I am not advocating violence, and I know some people will disagree with me on this and that is fine, but I just feel that society today with all it's good intentions about raising kids to be a certain way is actually having the reverse effect and it is turning some kids into meek depressed kids that have no self value and no inner strength and that in turn creates problems like wanting to kill yourself at 11 yrs old. Like I said I know some people wont agree with me, but there's a time when standing up for yourself and kicking some ass does a world of good. I'll get off my soap box now1 point -

@Drifter, I don't understand why you would want to kill yourself either, however you can be bullied much more effectively these days that when we grew up. With social media and the onslaught from facebook, cellphones, twitter it's pretty easy to get a mob to torment someone. Before when you bullied you had to do it somewhat face to face which could mean a good ass kicking if you decided to torment the wrong person. Now you even get people to jump on the bandwagon that never even met who they are harassing just for the sake of harassing since there are no real consequences to them being dicks.1 point -

Mike I have never seen that video before but I gotta say wow. What a great video. I actually just saved it to my bookmarks. And honestly that describes me and the way I have lived my life for the past 8 years to a tee. There's one line in there where he says - “If you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you'll spend your life completely wasting your time. You'll be doing things you don't like doing in order to go on living, that is to go on doing things you don't like doing, which is stupid. Better to have a short life, doing what you like doing, than a long life spent in a miserable way." That's something I have been saying to my family and friends for the past 8 years. Some of them understand me and some don't. For the first 15 years of my adult working life (from age 19 till age 34) I did "What we are supposed to do" which was to have a career. I did not come from a rich family and I was just getting out of high school about the time a lot of you guys here were just being born so back then there were less people that went to college than in this current day and age. So not going to college I went into the learned trades field and I became a welder/fabricator. I did that for about 15 years and then about eight years ago when I lost my job welding I was bringing home close to $500 per week, which for a single guy without a college degree in 2005 was pretty decent money. When I lost my job I could have pretty easily went to another place and got the same type of job because I was an experienced certified TIG welder and that is a trade that is always in demand, but I decided not to do so. I ended up taking about six months off of doing anything and went up to my cabin on the river and spent some time there just fishing and thinking about life and what I wanted to do. When I came home I had made the decision that I was tired of spending 50% of my life doing something that I did not "want" to do, getting up at a time I did not want to get up at, taking orders from someone I did not even like (I hated my old boss) and simply was just tired of throwing away half the time in my life in exchange for money. So what I did was I decided since my true love in life, the one thing I loved to do more than anything else in life was to fly fish and to enjoy everything to do with fishing and the outdoors, then I would take something that I enjoyed doing (building custom fly rods) and turn that into a business so I could do something that was related to something I loved. So that's what I did and have been doing for the past eight years. The real trade off there was giving up a steady income and not making money the goal in my life. Because back then I worked so I would get that paycheck on Thursday. Now the past eight years I really live pretty much month to month. Rarely do I have more than a few hundred "extra" bucks in the bank after I pay the bills each month. I don't have any real insurance if I get sick, I have something called "care credit" which is basically a credit card used just for doctors which I pay for entirely myself like you would a credit card. Yet I'm happier now doing this than I ever was when I was making good money as a welder. Because I enjoy what I am doing There's times when I actually work longer hours now than when I punched a clock, perfect example was today. It' Sunday, yet I worked on rods from 1pm till 11pm today so that's a good 10hrs of work today. But it's different when you enjoy what your doing. While working today I had on some fishing videos, had on a couple movies, watched "Deck the halls" to get into the Christmas spirit since that is coming up, and just did my work while enjoying movies and shows. So I built rods for 10 hours but can I say I really "worked"...I dunno, you be the judge. This lifestyle is not for everyone though. I'm single, no kids, not looking for a wife and not looking to have a family of my own, don't care much for fancy namebrand stuff or any of the other high dollar items or such. I call those kind of people "plastic people" and that's just not me. But I understand people that want wives and families or big houses and all have to do careers they may not enjoy, that's just not me though. Like I said I don't have the money I use to have, but that's fine with me. As long as my bills are paid each month and I have the few things I enjoy like my immediate family, my aquariums, and being able to go fishing when I want then to me that's all I need to have an enjoyable life. Money is something that is man made and is the cause of a lot of pain and suffering IMHO. Just my .021 point
