So the past week or so I finally got around to watching this series, I loved the original trilogy and enjoyed the Hobbit trilogy and had this on my radar but it has taken me some time to get to it.

Fantasy worlds are very much my think, I used to big into reading and have read books by David Eddings, David Gemmell, Christopher Paolini and Robert Jordan, all books set within Fantasy worlds and Lord of the Rings is of the same ilk.

Watching The Rings of Power has reignited that a little bit and I picked up 'Murtagh' the other day by Christopher Paolini. The tv series is decent and in fact I think I enjoyed it more than the Hobbit Trilogy with the exception of the ending which felt lacklustre and felt it was not really conclusive. It is a tv series and there is a second season in the works so it sort of makes sense but I feel like big things like this need to be shorter rather than being drawn out, if I was to sit and read a book I can read it through to completion in one sitting if I really wanted to, it's generally the same with video games and I think recently I am beginning to lose some of my enthusiasm for all these TV series, it is a lot of time to invest in them at a point in my life where I have a lot of things vying for my attention.

So season 2 is out, and 5 episodes are available on Prime. Just watched the first. Cant get over that Elrond is casted with the wrong guy.

The Stranger can now speak, cant remember him doing that on the last season ending...

I enjoy the series, but I dont get the LOTR/Tolkien feeling about it. Everything just feels less grand compared to the LOTR movies.

he could speak a little. We re-watched season 1 because we couldn't really remember what happened. found it helps a little to get context of what is going on this time

Have just had this on this week, I think the story is half decent. The issue is we think of Lord of the rings being grander in scale, huge quest to save the world, huge battles with Nazgul and trolls and mighty warriors.

This series is enjoyable but it does not have the same grandeur.

In fact everyone fondly remembers the original trilogy yet I don't believe Tolkien was a fan of the films at all.

I'm going to spin off this topic slightly. As a teenager I also grew up reading Eddings, Gemmel and Jordan, I'd also add Raymond E. Feist to that list. Do you think any of these author's books are ripe for television? Those not already televised that is...

I have yet to read Eddings' books, I have a load of them on my shelf. I would like to think maybe some of Gemmel's? I feel like Waylander's story could be told well via a tv series, it has a great redemption story and they could look at how they develop him on screen going from the immoral assassin.

A series around Drenai could definitely work for sure.

As for Eddings, if you have the Belgariad series, Pawn of Prophesy etc go for it, it's an easy read and excellent story arc.

I always liked Druss but I am not sure he would appeal to the mainstream so much. There were certainly some great battles though from memory, when it comes to reading I can generally conjure up the images in my head of what's going on so I may have be remembering grander battles and such than what actually happened.

A pet love for me as well are the Tales of Redwall books, I loved these when I was younger and it brought the traditional fantasy style of books into something you could relate to a little more with Otters, badgers & mice as the main characters. These should be a TV series at some point.
