SpecialEffect Gaming Charity

I've recently been following a fantastic charity based in Oxfordshire who help disabled people engage in videogames using specially engineered and modified controllers to enable them enjoy something we all take for granted on a daily basis. Some of the work this organisation has done has been remarkable and the stories from the people have been truly inspiring. It really puts into perspective the pointless squabbles we see too often on Call of Duty!

To learn more; have a browse at http://www.specialeffect.org.uk/

There is also the SpecialEffect GameBlast 24 hour endurance fundraiser that a few of you may be interested in http://www.specialeffect.org.uk/gameblast

Thanks for reading

A while back on the old forum (and I'm talking mw2forum.com old) a guy called 'AskACapper' made a few posts. He's a quadraplegic gamer and comedian (and is quite popular on youtube now). He was asking for help with a petition to add button remapping in CoD to make it easier for him to game. It might be worth tweeting or messaging him to see if he can send traffic that way, I'm sure he'd be interested.

We could get a ForeverGaming 24 hour stream going. I'm sure a few of us (especially Dylan  ) would be up for it. Either way I'd really like to help out somehow.

I haven't seen Dylan on here for over a week - maybe he's attempting his world record attempt or perhaps he's just forgotten he's a member of this community

Even if we can't scramble something together in time for the GameBlast event; there is an easy way of donating through the justgiving site. I get paid at the end of the week so I will weigh in with a few notes from my PS4 games fund. I donated a fiver earlier instead of buying the Hitman Franchise which made me feel very happy :)

I'm down with anything, let me know and i'll make sure i'm free to help.

Definitely a worthy charity!

If we can't sort anything out then i'll host a 24 hour live stream at mine if anyone's interested, if not i'll definitely be doing something towards this. Thank you for posting this! <3

Dave, hit me up man and we'll sort something! I'm busy as hell at work but will put my spare time into this!

Also if people could think of games that we could stream so it's not just COD and BF, our main issue will be picking games, 24hours is a long time and we want to pick games which people will find exciting.

I used to do quite a lot for a few charities but since i've moved to London i haven't really done much and since i've been a gamer since i was around 5 this seems like the perfect way to give me thanks back to gaming.

I figured we'd be a team and make it from Forever Gaming, i don't know if Dave has the same sort of ideas but super hyped about doing this so going to post lots.

I think you might have to quit work for this Dave :D

As a regular Twitch viewer, I've noticed that CoD and especially BF4 get hardly any views in comparison to other games. This could just be to do with specific large channels playing the same games but it seems MOBA's, Dayz, Minecraft etc. all get the most views. And obviously more views = more donations.

Good morning Caroline,

I hope you had a nice weekend. Following on from our discussion from Friday 24/01/2014, I’d like to introduce you to a charity I’m hoping to get involved in, and hopefully get some backing from BT. Ultimately I’d like to host an event for these folks to help raise funds for their cause, but more on that later.

As you are aware I am a video gamer myself and it’s a hobby I thoroughly enjoy, and I have a small website which revolves around this hobby too.

SpecialEffect is a charity which helps people with disabilities to enjoy the games we as able-bodied gamers all take for granted. This ranges from basic support, to fully bespoke, customized control systems. It really is quite amazing what they manage to achieve with their small reach.

The charity was founded in 2007 and has gained quite a lot of support over the years it’s been active. I only recently found out about them thanks to one of the folks on my website, and I decided to try and host and event which some of the charity’s beneficiaries could attend and hopefully raise some funds for them in the process.

I’ve been in contact with the charity themselves and they seem very enthusiastic at this possibility, and are able to bring a few of their guys to an event, although it won’t be many due to the restrictive nature of their disabilities.

Ideally I’d like to host a day of gaming with able-bodied gamers and these guys alike, with some competitions and prizes, lunch, snacks, some drinks and a great atmosphere for all to enjoy, all the while raising both awareness and funds for their cause.

I’ve spoken with my wife about this, who has almost a decade of managing restaurants and events under her belt, and we feel quite confident that we can get something together.

Of course the big question to ask BT is whether or not the company would be willing to help out at all, and if so, in what ways. Ideally speaking we’d like a venue for a weekend so we can stage an event. We’d look after the catering, I will approach various companies like Coca Cola, Monster Energy and whoever else is willing to help us make this an unforgettable day for this cause.

Obviously having a room full of televisions and consoles is a bit of a stretch, but for this I will also be approaching companies like GAME to see if they’d be willing to help out in any way.

I think the first port of call is to see whether or not BT would be able to help at all, and Kyla (my wife) and I will take it from there. If not, we’ll find other ways to do something to make a difference. If BT agrees, I will proceed to contact other companies to test the waters and see how far we can get on goodwill, and following that I’ll start raising funds to make this happen.

Obviously this is a fairly large plan but one I’m quite confident we can achieve.

I am also a member of various online gaming communities and I’ve reached out and asked the gaming community what they think of this idea, and the support has simply been overwhelming.

I think that this is an excellent cause which will tie in very well with the BT brand.

Please let me know if there’s any more information you’d like, I’ll be more than happy to provide where needed.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

And now we wait...
