I'm finally going to build myself a PC after years of talking about it but i wanted to get an idea from everyone about what the best possible build i could get.

My main aim would be to use it for gaming but i will also eventually use it for rendering etc

The most i'd like to spend is £1200 but if someone has good reasons that i should spend a bit more then i probably would.

Also my favourite colour is green (massively important)

Its a shame you live across the pond. I'd build it for you if you bought the parts.

Luke 23:34
'And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they don't think it be like it is, but it do."

Oh i don't mind putting it together, i just wanted to get an idea from as many people as possible before making purchases.

Just a list of hardware n what not would be perfect!

I figure i don't really need anymore than 16gb of ram and i'm pretty sure i'd go with the GTX 980. I want this thing to last as long as possible so i kind of want as good as i can get really.

oooohhh

Dave is the current Hardware master. I sadly have fallen off the bandwagon of staying current with hardware trends

Other than AMD > Nvidia

Might last processor was AMD but i wouldn't give them a look at the moment. I might do for graphics but will probs stick to a GTX. Unless anyone can change my mind :)

Good man Rich :) I'd avoid AMD personally, especially seeing that 99% of developers can't optimise games for shit on that hardware! With a budget of just over a grand; you should be looking at an Intel i7 4790k 4.4ghz, Nvidia GTX 980, 16gb DDR3 RAM, Corsair H55 cooler, a big fat case and Windows fucking 7 B)

Ohai :)

Me again.

First off, what peripherals have you got? How much space have you got? What resolution do you want? You could get a 1080p monitor with eleven millionty refresh rates or a 1440p with a good refresh rate. You could also go 4k with a slower refresh rate but this will melt your face when editing. Imagine all your apps, all at once, on one massive screen.

Personally I've got a Samsung 32" 1440p screen that cost summat like £380 and it is just gorgeous. 32" might sound large but once your'e used to it, there's no going back.

When you say green, do you mean the colour or Nvidia?

We can build it at mine if you like. I'll just hafta push all my Lego aside :P

Can we build it out of Lego?  :o

For now i'd just be plugging it in to my standard 32" but once i move and have some space i'll sort out getting a proper screen for it. I can make a decent amount of space for the tower itself so that's no issue. 4K does sound like a winner because the idea is that this thing lasts and doesn't get old quick.

In terms of green i meant green flashing leds cuz they makes it run faster no?  ^_^

Hmmm.

4k is lovely but in terms of gaming performance we won't be there for a long time still. Even triple 8gb 290x cards can't max the games at decent rates.

Personally I'd say 1440p and get a monitor with the price. Honestly once you see the picture on my monitor compared to anything 1080p you'll see why, it's simply on a whole different level.

I'll scribble something up later xxx

Following on from this we just need to look at the motherboard and what you need the PC for.

Check this website, it's really useful and I spent a lot of time when getting my own little beast: http://www.logicalincrements.com/

Oh for reals this time, even if someone has to work it won't be me that's called so i'm definitely free :)

My old man was rushed into hospital at the weekend and has been diagnosed with bowel cancer. He had his colon removed on Monday in an emergency op....so I don't think I'll be out at the weekend, sorry guys.

Oh jeez, sorry to hear that Phil :(

Wow, sorry Phil. Wishing him well.

I was wondering, on the video rendering that you want to use it for, do the rendering program(s) you use utilize video card support? Thinking of programs like Xilisoft Video Converter that have a Nvidia Cuda option which speeds up the process by also using your GPU. And I have 16GB of RAM, its nice, if you're doing renders maybe you should consider going with 32GB. Not sure about pricing there and now but my 16GB was only $100. If you can score 32GB for under $200 and it aids speed, the time you'll save might be worth the extra money. Plus you'll be able to render and watch porn at the same time. RAM it

Thanks guys, the old fella is doing well, tough as an old boot.

Rich, one thing to remember with builds is don't be stingy when it comes to a PSU. I have a 750W Corsair Builder Series power supply and you can find it for around £70.

Pew pew baby!

Completely forgot about this until now, sorry dude but better late than never!

i7 4770k - Fastest affordable CPU on the market, supports hyperthreading which is great for the shit you do at work.

Gigabyte mobo - Lots of features. Tons you'll probably never use but we're paying for the reliability here, not the features. Last thing you want is to be working on a massive project only for the thing to bluescreen or something.

16gb of RAM - You could go to 32gb later on, but I'd try this first and see how it goes, and like this you're still in budget. It's also a 2x8gb rather than a 4x4 kit so you'll always have a few slots spare should you want to upgrade later.

GTX980 - Fastest single-core GPU on the market. 'Nuff said. The only card that will trump this in the foreseeable future is the Titan X, which goes on sale tomorrow and will be between £800 and a grand. You could however go for an AMD R9 290x 8gb model which will come pretty damn close to this 980 performance wise and in some games even beat it. This will save you a hundred or so but you'll need a few fans in the case as that baby pumps out enough heat to power Bangkok. The 980 has very low power needs and heat dissipation. Great card.

600w PSU - Again, a bit of a premium here but this is for reliability purposes. This is assuming the 980 as GPU. If you go for the AMD option, go for a 750w. As this PC is now, this PSU is perfectly fine and this PSU will allow you to clock the nuts off both the CPU and GPU without breaking a sweat.

Case - This is just a placeholder but is a great case. Pick any ATX case you like which is in budget and a reputable brand.

Thank's Dave! It's funny you should post today because the other day when I was speaking to Phil I said I'd probably get a laptop purely because of room and I can take it to work but I decided this morning, fuck it I'm getting a pc.

I'm going to make purchases this weekend :) then when Iv got all the bits you can come and help me drink.....errm build :)
