  1. It's existing material that I use in classes and statistics I've kept. That's how the primary author became aware of me. Essentially I'm taking something I normally present in person, changing the format to written, adding more narrative elements since there's no way to live demonstrate, and then going over the lessons that particular incident imparts.
  2. I sent in my first draft. The chapter is roughly 75% complete and completely unedited at this point, but just to verify content and format was what they had in mind. Feedback was positive, so...neat. I've not been informed of the title or the release date yet. My dead line is in late June.
  3. Yeah. I figure it's something humans will get immediately but won't pop up on a Google search or the like.
  4. It's SuPrisingly Easy Nowadays to Clearly figurE our Real names from screen names by Googling it and connecting one name to the other to the other. Posting the pen name would sort of eliminate the point of using it. I'm sure you fellows will figure it out, just don't spoil the surprise and post it.
  5. He got the go ahead from the editor, so we're moving forward with the assumption the contract will be signed shortly. After mulling it over with my family and with my supervisors, I did elect to use a pen name.
  6. "Switched on" means serious about training and it's application to self preservation. You'd be surprised how many cops never touch their gun except at mandated inservice, don't seek outside agency training on managing contacts, etc.
  7. I've had some issues with my Redhawk 5032 that resulted in Ruger swapping my original out of spec revolver for a new one. The new one was significantly better, but was not quite 100% reliable in double action. I think I've got it resolved. The first thing I did was tear the revolver down and inspect the innards. There were no obvious burrs or major issues, but I did notice it was completely dry. I lubed all contact points and reassembled. The second thing I did was stone the hammer a bit where the hammer hits the frame. There were machine marks on it, almost like a finger print but more regular, and it did not appear to be hitting exactly flush. I stoned it down smooth, taking maybe a few hundredths of an inch of metal. The result was a significant improvement in reliability. Using Starline brass, CCI primers, and 6.6 grains of Titegroup under a 230 gr plated bullet, I loaded up 40 test cartridges of .45 Colt. I also took a box of factory HST .45 ACP hollowpoints. All cartridges fired. All HSTs were shot double action, 34/40 of the handloads were shot double action. The HST did occasionally result in my face being pelted with debris. I'm not sure if it's shaving the bullet a bit or I'm just getting blow back. I was on an indoor range and unable to recover bullets. None of the handloads caused the issue. Accuracy was within acceptable limits given my skill level. Handloads at 7y, 1 called flier, double action. Speeding up a bit, 34 shots into upper box. 6 shots of slow fire in the circle (the first two were center and slightly to my right, as I went along I pushed a bit high) and the final 4 cartridges in the 1" square were shot single action. I heeled the first shot bad and it's the highest one. Took my time and got it down into the box. The load shoots POA when I do my part. I find the round butt a bit more difficult than a square butt and suspect I'm heeling the gun a little bit. This is 18 shots of HST, all double action, in strings of 6. Shoot 6, drop the moon clip, reload and get right into the next 6. I don't have any S&B primed cartridges at the moment to see if it will now pop harder primers, but initial results look good for CCI primers and domestic ammunition. This isn't a high volume revolver for me, but I still intend to load up some of the cheaper primers and see how they do.
  8. Via a rather small forum of folks who are serious gun handlers. Lots of high end trainers, competitors, switched on cops, and researchers. He liked the stats I collect and post about citizen vs criminal fights and my writing style. I'll leave at that until I have leave to say more publicly.
  9. An author, former police officer, and world famous firearms instructor contacted me and asked if I'd be interested in contributing a chapter to his upcoming book and offered what I felt was very fair compensation for the work. Like enough to get a new Sig P226 Legion kind of compensation. I almost deleted the message because I thought it was spam, no way this guy was actually contacting me. I read it, called him, and sure as fuck it's him. I've seen his videos in police training classes and online, I know his voice. It was tough not to go full fanboy and ask him to sign my titties, but I kept it reasonably professional. No way I could negotiate the pay, I'd have done it for a sip of his coke and the last bite of his grilled cheese. We're going to meet in person the next time he's in my area. I may still ask him to sign my titties. I don't think the department will let me use my real name. I've got to come up with a sweet pen name if not. He said other active cops who've done this sort of work for him often use a fake name until they retire and then use their real names afterward. I don't know if this will lead to anything more, but even if it's a one and done it's a big honor for me and it's a really nice feeling to have an acknowledged international expert recognize some research I've done as valid and the takeaways as important to the point he believes the information will save lives of lawful handgun carriers. Plus I may get my titties signed, so you know, there's that. He said the contract isn't finalized but once it is we'll get started. Further updates as events warrant.
  10. That's the important bit. I'm just not up for a new game right now. Too much other stuff going on. I've still got the Uncharted trilogy that came with the PS4 and haven't even taken it out of the wrapper yet...
  11. Heh, I've played this with my son. I like the orange with the shield.
  12. I seem to recall you being a bit late to the ME3 game after SOMEONE was telling you it was awesome. Truthfully, I only bought Destiny and Taken King to play with you since we hadn't had a game in common for awhile. I don't think I've done anything since the Iron Banner we played together. If I get anything you've talked about lately, it'll probably be Witcher 3. Right now I'm not trying to get into anything that's a time sink, though, so it'll likely be next fall/winter before I start anything new.
  13. The Butcher books get better as they go. First three are formulaic, but character development and story is vastly better after that.
  14. WTF ME3 uses "X" to sprint instead of pushing down the left stick. (Doc is playing ME3 again. Lag is more laggy, but otherwise enjoying it)
  15. I read it, mostly to say I did. I remember nothing about it. Dostoevsky, he's more interesting. I ended up reading several of his books. I recall enjoying "The Idiot" quite a bit, but don't recall much about it any longer. I think it was '03 or '04 when I read it..
  16. Perhaps a gentle reminder to others on the friends list that it's that person's birthday? I see my aunt say "happy birthday" to her youngest son. I am reminded to do the same, and since I don't know all my cousins birthdays, he gets birthday greetings he otherwise wouldn't. Hypothetically speaking, as I don't have a Facebook/twitter/etc page.
  17. Yeah, the reason for "Russians, you're no damn better". It's been awhile since I read Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, but holy shit that was tough to remember who's who. The character's name changed based on who was talking to them, with various forms of formal and informal address. I get it, we do the same thing with traditional English names. William Brown can be Mr. Brown, WIlliam, Bill, Willy, etc. etc. but if you haven't grown up with it, it's tough to keep track of. If we're translating for foreign readers, let's tidy it up a bit.
  18. Could we please fucking standardize spelling of translated names? Look, I completely get that Ancient Fuckistan and it's ruler Cletus the Flatulent used a different alphabet and pronunciations won't be exact. Howsabout the academic community just pick one and stick with it when translating them into English. Phuckstan, Foochestan, Phuceestan...there's all the same fucking place. Pick one. I've been reading up on the Mongols and holy shit, it's impossible to remember who's who and where's where because different books call the same city different things. Russians, you're no damn better. Arabs? Forget about it. I'm reading a translation of an Arabic history of the Mongol invasion of present day Persian Gulf area and dafuq am I reading?? I particularly like things like The Western Province of Huffledump (also known as Bob's Place by some scholars...) WTF? I get how we ended up with fifteen phonetic-ish spellings, but when they aren't even remotely close...HTF did that happen? And since they've all been dead for roughly 800 years, just pick one and go with it, they don't care any longer.
  19. To play Devil's Advocate, seeing as other than the Iron Banner event this has absolutely no impact on anyone other than the person buying vs grinding...why should I care? In a PvP game, I totally get it. Buy this DLC or box o' treasure or whatever to get an advantage over the slobs who don't, the "pay to win" microtransaction, got it. In a PvE game, though? I'm a bit more ass-chapped about the cost of the Fallout 4 season pass, personally. $50? And you're going in blind about what all you're going to get? Fuck that sideways.
  20. There is FBS, then there are real enhancements. In a building game, things might really add to it that would be FBS in a first person shooter. I'd like more tiles for building in Fallout. Playing house is part of the content, just like upgrading power armor. I don't care if the clouds morph realistically. I do care that pointless side stories are included because they encourage exploration and exposure to more content. I don't care if Super Mutants get more dialogue options. Etc.
