DayZ Mod - Anyone?

Does anyone still play the DayZ mod?  I play it from time to time, but I feel so lost.  I've got a big keyboard printout of the controls, but it's still pretty confusing.  I love the game, but feel like such a noob when I play.  

 

For instance... I've equipped axes before, but is a hatchet different?  I couldn't figure out how to equip it.  The description only mentioned chopping wood.  Are there different types, some you can use to kill zombies, some only for wood?  Simple things like equipping items, switching items, etc., I feel so lost.  

 

Anyone care to give a noob some quick tips?

Just played for about another hour.  Made a lot of progress.  I found a pistol and some ammo.  Killed 2 zombies without attracting too much attention.  Found a suppressor for my pistol!  Definitely excited about that.  Managed to get some good basic supplies; pain killers, food, and drinks.  That was all in Chernarus.  I started moving toward a farm and found a nice rifle with some ammo.  Also found a fishing pole.  I'm not sure where I'm going to go next.  I'd still like to find a nice melee weapon.

Fuck me.  I'm dead.  I was doing so good.  LOL.  Did some more exploring.  Got jumped by 3 zombies, killed them, took some damage, but managed to bandage myself.  I started exploring some gas station area, came out, and someone shot me w/o saying a word.  Just cold blooded murder, lol.  

 

Well, back to the start.  

 

 

 

Can someone explain the health system a bit?   There's blood loss, hunger, thirst.  There's pain killer, blood packets, food, drink.  How does the interaction with them all work?  

 

Edit:  I looked up a guide on the video settings.  Basically, it said to turn off AA, Vsync, and Post P.   then bump everything else up high.  I did that and it looks waaay better.  Not so blurry and smudged looking.  Nice and crisp.  Now I just need to get my FPS up a bit.  I'm around 30 most of the time.

The red axe is your best friend. Doesn't consume ammo, they're fairly common, will take a zed out in one hit and are silent. Everyone's a killer, there's no such thing as friendly people any more, it's basically TDM.

I may have to re-install this at some point. I departed and went on to play the standalone DayZ for a while but the progress there is still a bit iffy it seems so I may have to return to the mod as that's feature packed and more stable. I'll have to learn the bindings again though - all the keys are different from DayZ and Arma III which is a pain

I love DayZ mod. I'm more than happy to jump on and give you a few pointers, if you're about tomorrow I should be free all tomorrow night UK time. I'll probably need a break from GTAV and teamspeak is still working last time I checked.

I work all weekend.  I won't be online again until Sunday night or Monday.  

 

Do you know of any decent servers to play on?  I've been playing on one called Noobsplayground   No idea why, but it's just the one I keep going back to.

I know noobsplayground, have been on it myself. I haven't played the mod for ages so I went on last night for a short time to see what's changed. I'm impressed with the work of Razor and the others as they seem to have continued upgrading the mod. It looks really nice these days.

 

Playing on a vanilla server is best as you get the intended experience. A lot of servers let you start with a weapon and some decent gear but I prefer to start like I just washed up on the beach.

 

Do you use steam to find a server or do you use one something like DayZ Commander or DayZUploader? I can be on Sunday night if you're up for it, maybe we can get Dave or James on too!

I've been using DayZ Commander.  It seems to work well for me.  Should I be using something else?  NoobsPlayground starts you out with your basic equipment.  I feel like that's cheating.  I'd prefer playing on a vanilla server, but not sure which one to go to.  I think that NoobsPlayground is EU server as well, and I'm NA.  I need to find a good vanilla NA server.  

 

That would be awesome to have a party!  I'd definitely be down for that.  I've got teamspeak installed.

The only problem with DayZ Commander is that it is using an old version of the mod. You may need to check. I used to be a massive fan of Commander so it's a shame.

 

The current mod version is 1.8.4.1 and Commander has only up to 1.8.3.

 

Also, there's a US 434 vanilla server that has a ping I can manage. Maybe not tonight but from say 9pm UK time to 1am UK time tomorrow I'm available to team up

Thanks for the heads up on the version.  I didn't realize that.  I'll look for that 434 Vanilla server as well.  Not sure about that time slot, I'll get back to you when I know what's going on.  Thanks!

Ok just give me a shout for when's good and we'll see what we can do. I should be free most of the week the same hours but can do a little earlier, say 7.30pm if needed (except Wednesday when I play football).

 

I notice that the FG teamspeak server now seems to belong to someone else as I just logged in and found a couple of dutch guys on there. Me and Dave were on it a month or so ago but I don't think anyone else has used or paid for it in ages. I can probably find an alternate server we can use.
