  1. A thread for the little things that went better than expected. As a starter: I tried a pumpkin funnel cake with cream cheese icing today. I had expected a standard funnel cake with some pumpkin pie spice. I was wrong. It was a pumpkin based batter, sort of like a runny pumpkin pie, fried up in the traditional funnel cake style, and the cream cheese icing was very nicely done. I expected it to be good, because how do you fuck up a funnel cake, but I didn't expect it to be fantastic. Expected result: 6/10 Received result: 9/10 Option of having whipped cream would have made it a perfect score.
  2. A more open sight would be less accurate, and probably slower to acquire. All sights are a trade off, no one design is perfect for everything. Open sights main "pro" is that they are cheap and very durable. They aren't particularly accurate, are either non-adjustable or minimally adjustable, and aren't very fast to acquire a sight picture with (with some notable exceptions). Peep sights (aka aperture sights) are both faster (generally) and more accurate. They also offer a trade off, though. The bigger the disk in the rear, and the smaller the hole, the more accurate it is. The smaller the disc and the bigger the hole, the faster it is. The most open type is a ghost ring, which is very fast to get a sight picture with and to acquire a target with. However, the larger gap all around the front sight makes it harder to judge and get it centered on both horizontal and vertical planes. The M-16 still has peep sights, and the rear sight flips to give you a big aperture and a little aperture. For close quarters, you flip to the big aperture because you want the speed to start putting rounds on a target as fast as possible and are more worried about hits than bull's eye accuracy. At longer ranges, you need the extra precision afforded by the smaller aperture despite the speed penalty. IIRC, the Army trained us to flip to small past 50m unless it was dark and then you always use the large aperture because you need more light coming through. Now, there are exceptions to the rule. There are some very fast open sights out there. They tend to be horrible on accuracy, though, usually with a very wide and shallow rear "V" type notch and a large ball of a front sight. These are often on "bush guns", or rifles made to take down dangerous wild game in a sudden encounter. Think of turning the corner and a pissed off Grizzly is 40 yards away and starting to charge you. You've got a really big target that you need to dump rounds into really fast, so that type of sight makes sense for that type of rifle.
  3. There's got to be a fantastic story behind that one.
  4. I got to take out the 1903 today, but only at close range and I couldn't really stretch its legs. Its about 2.5" high at 75-80 yards, so I'm figuring its set to be dead nuts on somewhere around 175, but I'm guessing. Once I look at a ballistics chart I can figure it out for sure. Prone: Sitting: With the following results (the circle is about 1.5" across, so you get an idea of scale): I had one flier that's just out of the top of the screen on string #1, and you can see I've got one too far right on string #2. Both were my fault, the gun is capable of much better shooting than me. The first cartridge I fired was the flier in the first string, and got the target in the "neck". I wasn't ready for the trigger to break yet, its lighter than I anticipated and while I was taking up the slack...bang! I moved back as far as I could (my wife was being range safety and not letting anyone walk through an opening in the cinder block wall, so no photos) and did some standing shots: The one on the right is standing. I can definitely tighten that up as I get used to the gun and put a sling on it to help hold it steady while shooting. Once I get a chance to use my "private range" on my own property I can take it back to 150 yards pretty handily and see how it will do.
  5. Damn it. Now I got Interpol waiting outside your house for no damned reason. Thanks for making me look like a dick, Cal.
  6. Sausage fest in the shout box!!!!
  7. Dear Cal, Early in our dating relationship, my wife invited me to meet her family. She was bragging and bragging about what a great cook her mother was and how I would just love everything. We went and dinner was great...until dessert. See, her mom makes this jello thing with cherries suspended in it. I hate the texture of cherries and I never eat them whole like that. However I was anxious to make a good first impression, and of course I didn't want to upset my wife who thinks her mom is God's gift to the dinner table, so I just manned up and ate it. Of course my future mother-in-law wanted to know what I thought of her signature dessert, so I played it up. I said how much I liked it, how I'd never had cherries served in such an interesting fashion, etc. That's been twelve years ago. Now EVERY DAMNED TIME WE GO guess what's for dessert? Oh yeah, the son in law's FAVORITE cherry dessert. It makes me throw up a little in my mouth, but after this long I'm embarrassed to admit I don't like cherries and have just been playing along for over a decade. Its going to ruin Thanksgiving, I just know it. Should I stage her death so it looks like a suicide, an accident, or just have her disappear? Maybe take out the pool boy too and make it look like they ran off together?
  8. Thanks. I'll be alright, just takes a little time.

  10. Sorta NSFW. https://i.chzbgr.com/maxW500/7806415872/hC01481B8/ Gotta click it, it says I can't use that extension on this community.

  12. Its a precision peep sight. Keep in mind this baby is going to kick a bit, so you can't get right up on it or you'll hit yourself in the eye. You need the big disk to block the "not the target" stuff. You look through the little hole and center the front sight post. Your eyes will naturally want to center it, so its pretty intuitive. It is fully adjustable for both elevation and windage. I've got high hopes for it.
  13. Ok, this is fucking unreal. Now we've had an officer die of a heart attack. What the fuck is up with this week? I am getting pretty damned tired of bad news.
  14. Pics of my new rifle: That's kind of dark, but this shows the grain of the wood pretty well: and the peep sights:
  15. Probably about 8. I'd sit on my granddad's lap while he worked the pedals. Sometimes he was rather intoxicated. They'd crucify someone for that today.
  16. I'm entering new territory with a big caliber rifle. My center fire rifle experience is primarily the AR-15 platform, followed by the AK, and a little bit of playing around with a .30-30 lever action. I've never done much long distance work past 300 m. I just picked up a sporterized Springfield 1903a3 .30-06 today. These rifles are considered extremely accurate. The rifling and bore are in good condition, and its the more sought after 4 groove barrel, not the 2 groove. The wood is very nice looking and has a swell for the cheek rest. I'll get pics up soon. Sporterized = previously issued military weapon converted into a hunting rifle, usually with a change of the stock and the sights, sometimes with the addition of a scope mount. Looks very similar to this, only with a fantastic set of peep sights instead of a scope:
  17. I'm no expert, I can only tell you what's worked for me in the past. 1,000 calories a day isn't enough. Lose weight too quickly and you're losing more muscle than fat, plus your body doesn't like those rapid changes and will fight harder to get the weight back on. Something like www.myfitnesspal.com will track your calories. Shoot for a 500-750 calorie deficit per day when you're losing weight and a 300-500 calorie a day surplus when you're bulking. Basically when you're gaining weight you want a little surplus so your body says "hey, we're in good times so we can afford the metabolic effort to repair and build muscles." Its inevitable you will gain some fat as well, though. So then you cut, but not too fast, so you lost fat faster than muscle. I was 283 lbs when I decided I was going to get back in shape and be a security contractor. I got down to 250 when I left. I'm 245 now, 8 years later. My body composition has suffered though, and since the end of July I've been losing weight to get my fat content down. Once I hit about 220 I'll start bulking again, and repeat until I settle in at about 230 with the body fat percentage I want (and can reasonably maintain.) Again, not a nutritionist or expert, I just know its worked well for me in the past.
  18. No worries. Its easy to misconstrue intent when you're just looking at text.
  19. Efficiency, mostly. A lot of police runs are one man runs. Report runs where the crime has already occurred and the suspect is gone, simple traffic crashes, "see the complainant" where people just want advise or to ask a question, etc. If you have two guys in one car, they are only able to get to half as many of those runs. Indy is down about 500 officers from recommended staffing levels. No way in hell we're going to double up in cars. When you have enough officers and response times are reasonable you can stage and wait until another car gets there and then roll in together. Bradway's backup was coming up the stairs as the original exchange of shots occurred. It wouldn't have changed the outcome if he'd been right with him. Bradway was shot as soon as he entered the door.
  20. You did see the follow up question was about fruit trees, yes? Are you going to head over to the necrophilia guide and say how that's nothing to be joked about as well? Neither is a serious thread. Since you brought it up, I don't care one way or the other about transgender. It takes up about as much of my concern as breast implants or hair transplants, ie, zero. Whatever you want to do to your body, go for it, wtf would I care? As long as I don't have to pay for it, I don't care if you rectify your perceived gender issues with therapy or hormones and surgery.
  21. Note from Bradway's children pasted in his patrol car at the memorial.
  22. 2nd officer took an AK-47 round to the leg. Suspect is shot 3 times but will survive. Datte, I can't sleep and I'm cranky. Why don't you pony up the place to cheer me up?
  23. Got another officer shot tonight. http://www.wthr.com/story/23510131/2013/09/24/police-officer-shot-on-east-side-of-indianapolis Sounds like he's in stable condition.
