This new series has been created to facilitate the gameplay, metagame, and strategy discussion that often gets buried or lost in the abundance of others posts that flood this sub.

The goal of this series is to not only give new players a primer on a specific map, but also for midlevel or competitive players a chance to share the knowledge that they have accrued in their experiences and maybe let people know something that they did not know before.
Today's map is Kanal.

Iceycat's Tips & Tricks Kanal Guide
Kanal Wiki

The community has outlined a couple of things that they want to converse about with every map, but feel free to branch out should you feel a piece of information warrants its own discussion.

  • Overall map and team strategies for attacking & defending.
  • Secret areas, kill holes, and other techniques that can be used on the map.
  • The best operators to use on the map and different abilities that work & don't work with this map.
  • What strategies have you adopted while playing this map? What is something that a new player should know when playing this map, or what is something you know that would help a veteran player take that next step?
  • Does the map offer an unfair advantages to attackers or defenders?
  • Will Epi ever give us a release date for Bartlett University?
  • What is your overall opinion of this map?

Kanal is one of the most well-designed maps in my opinion. 2 distinct buildings with a single connector, a wide variety of angles and windows that allow defenders to cover all of the building, but when an area is cleared by attackers it is fully cleared - if an attacker thoroughly checks out brown building then covers the skybridge, there's no easy way a defender can loop around and surprise the attackers, which is a bit of a problem in other maps where you can clear a floor but by the time you do you're aware that a defender could already have run around the map and returned.

While this is a good advantage for attackers, the actual attack angles on each objective are tight and defenders have lots of room to set up ambushes and use patience to punish aggression. It's a nice cat and mouse game.

  • Kanal is spawn killer central. Be very careful approaching the building and check every window. My favorite spawn is construction because you can take out both construction and sailboat cameras, but you can also peek from underneath the tractor and check for defending window peekers.
  • Kanal is a roamer's dream. You can almost guarantee there will be a defender in the opposite building looking to pick off rappelers.
  • This is one of the few maps where Glaz does well. Providing overwatch and window pressure on Server room is a huge threat.
  • Boat room is one of the hardest objectives to attack. (Maybe Laundry on Oregon is harder?)
  • Thermite is absolutely necessary for this offense because you don't want to be tunneled down Death Alley, nor do you want to enter from the northern door. Every route that doesn't involve Thermite makes you bottleneck in a predictable fashion, and you will be at a huge disadvantage.
  • If you don't have Thermite or he dies from snipers from the eastern building, try blowing out the floor in coast guard. Buck and Sledge is especially good for attacking Boats since they can open up holes to drop grenades through (if it isn't Hostage.)
  • To help on the boat room, rappel over the outside boat parked down from the death alley door and pop out the space over the reinforced doors. You can get some cheeky kills from there, but watch your left side for roamers coming from the other buildings garage.

Second - Server Room
Third - Maps Office
Worst - Coast Guard Office

Rescue Hostage

Third - Maps Office
Worst - Coast Guard Office

Such a pity I couldn't finish them off :(

If you knew where to actually go once you nailed those 3 it might have helped!
