I get paid tomorrow and H1Z1 is released, I don't want it to be any good but DayZ is still miles from being worth investing time in.

I should refrain from buying this one because if I wait til full release it becomes free.

I just want it now. Or I think I do.

I was initially interested in H1Z1 but it looks like a really weak DayZ clone with a bland and empty setting plus mediocre mechanics. The engine looks ancient also. I'll still give it a shot tomorrow probably but my expectations are pretty minimal. Can't believe we have to pay to play the alpha but the final release is free - should be the other way round in all honesty.

Game comes out at 6pm GMT. I've done quite a bit more research into the game and still not completely overwhelmed but the inventory system and crafting looks decent plus the anti-cheat and server-hop preventions are major positives. Only Sony servers will be available for the time being but they can support up to 500 players at this present time I think with a view to increase to 1,000 which will certainly make things interesting. The real-time weather and base building really adds to the concept too. Could be a welcome temporary departure from DayZ until they make sweeping improvements. I can't see H1Z1 dethroning DayZ but it certainly has some good material going forward and probably less technical woes. The game also looks like it could hold a steady framerate throughout which is something DayZ has struggled with and will continue to do so even into completion IMO.

I will probably have a look at H1Z1 later but I'm only going to invest in the bog-standard edition for starters.

I'll most likely give it a punt today, if I see anyone get it as we'll we'll have to hook up on TS3.

^hilarious, they're being a bit precious over an early access release, it says 1 hour now for me

Apparently it's now all ready the developers end and they're just waiting for Steam to do their bit...

You played it yet Phil? A lot of negative reviews coming in complaining about a P2W structure and about devs 'lying'. Gonna have to sift though some first impressions just so I get the gist of it and if I've missed anything that might put me off...

I tried to get in  last night, it was only a 4.2gb install but at 1am I gave up, the servers were obviously getting a lot of hits.

I watched a bit of ShoSho on Twitch and the jury is still well and truly out.

I'm not expecting much but expect at least £15 worth of enjoyment :)

The P2W supply drops were inevitable. Funnily enough, yesterday IGN did a shitty uncritical article on Sergey Titov (him of WarZ),  pretty much airbrushing history, and this game already smacks of the underhand crap that went on there...

Let us know how you get on Phil if you manage to connect to a server later - 30min to 5 hour wait for most people so far :o Certainly not the best of launches but I'll be keeping a close eye on this.

Sony are offering refunds already https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/556142754254704641

John Smedley has really inadvertently shot himself in the foot with that tweet regarding the P2W controversy!

Nice gesture for them to do this but a lesson learned in misleading marketing it seems. Still; that should make the community a happier place as people are raging crazy today!

"To make things clear, EA in this case stands for "Early Access" not "Electronic Arts"

EDIT: I have edited the post and have copied and pasted a post on /r/games by /u/ohh_yeah who formatted it much better than I did. Link to post

Although H1Z1 released only a few hours ago, players already have a bad taste in their mouth after being blatantly deceived by the dev team. When the F2P model was originally announced, Smedley made this post about their plans on the H1Z1 subreddit. Players were assured there, as well as in interviews and at gaming expos that the cash shop would be strictly cosmetic.
One of the main features of the cash shop would be air drops, where a player can pay some amount of cash to have a plane fly overhead randomly on the map, and drop a crate full of cosmetic items. In theory you could go fight for the crate yourself, but for the most part you'd be buying front row tickets to a cornucopia-style bloodbath. Smedley and other devs made it clear that air drops wouldn't contain actual survival gear, since that would detract from the experience. Instead, players could expect gun skins/hats/flags or other cosmetic items.

However, hours before the launch of the game, it was revealed by one of the devs, that:
"We have made the decision to allow paid for airdrops into the game with things like guns and other things being randomly selected as part of the airdrop."

Within an hour of launch, streamer "awildwatermelonappears" called in multiple airdrops to see how they worked. What he found is that airdrops fall a maximum of a ~20 second run away from you, and contain primarily military and survival gear. None of the airdrops he opened actually contained any cosmetic items. He received landmines, pistol ammo, an AR-15, a military backpack, first-aid kits, and other survival gear.

Smedley just made a post defending the system in the face of public outrage, and explained that some changes will be made to the drop radius in the next few days. He also made the statement:
"If you think it's P2W, don't play it."

However, people are still upset because a group of 5 players can easily claim a crate despite the zombies it attracts, and it's unlikely for other players to make it to the drop zone, or bother contesting it. There's also concern that no effort was put into making cosmetics, since none of the publicly-opened crates contained anything outlined in the original "COSMETICS ONLY" statement by SOE. They contained nothing but survival gear that gives players an advantage in the game."

Can't argue with that, I am pretty much the same.

I'm not able to log in but I have a million other games to play until they patch this game. When I finally get in I'm sure I'll enjoy liberating people of their paid for stuff.

Never understand that pay to win mentality really, if there's no challenge I don't see the point.

I could see Sony's plans a mile of so it's amusing to see their reaction to all that rage ;)
