I've been looking into buying a laptop for quite some time, but I have refrained from doing it because of the pre-installed Windows 8.

I've only had negative experiences from using it when helping my brother with his 2 laptops. He's constantly having issues and it's in my opinion a lot worse than the first releases of Vista.

I would much prefer Windows 7. AFAIK, there is no option to downgrade to it from Win 8  to 7 unless you buy the pro version first, which is much more expensive? Only to get permissions for a downgrade?

Is it because of a BIOS/hardware setting? Would it be possible to install Win 7 if you change the harddrive or flash an alternative BIOS?

What are my options?

Wait for Windows 10.

I attempted this for my dad, and the problem is that Microsoft required hardware Manufacturers to digitally sign their hardware to only work with certain OS's

While Digital signatures have been around since win 98, this new behaviour of only allowing X to work with Y OS is a horrible.

Actually, you are in the EU, so this might not be a concern as you guys have hammered MS over shit like this in the past

I don't think there is any way around it sadly. Blame Microsoft solely for this move. Basically to take a step backwards; you still have to take one forwards with the pro which costs more dimes to upgrade only to then have the consumer rights to go two steps backwards to enable the Win7 underlay. Shrewd move by them as people were justifiably unhappy with the core Windows 8 but instead of allowing people to move back to the old version; Microsoft added insult to injury by forcing them to pay a premium on a pro version upgrade and for the downgrade privilege in which they had to repurchase the standard 7 again.

See if you can find a custom-build website that does Laptops to suit your needs as most of those don't endorse such things as Windows 8 and you have the choice of components which can impact how much you want to pay.

Pre-built systems should be avoided at all costs these days as they don't represent good value for money based on what's inside as businesses try and make lavish margins plus tat like Windows 8 and other inferior components that they can't sell elsewhere, get clubbed into these pre-built machines.

I brought a laptop a while back with W8 on it and made the mistake of pressing the "upgrade to W8.1?" Button. That was a nightmare that I finally resolved by reverting to W8

I don't like the app look and do all my work from the old desktop screen - I still prefer XP out of all of them

F**kin' Microsoft.

I guess I'm better off with a custom built laptop anyway.

I'm not much of a gamer a the moment, so I don't think I need super high specs... I will primarily use it for photo editing and digital art, maybe some video editing and for work related stuff, writing etc. Do you know of any good websites for custom laptops?

Also, how do I know which components I should pick to get the most bang for the buck?

Thanks for the replies guys.
