That is true starting out. Not the case further on when you can infuse stuff. I got a chest piece that I really liked the perks and looks but it was a really low light,like 220. Since infusing it's now my highest piece of gear. So early on yeah but not in the long run.

Yeah,my cousin just started Destiny last week and used the spark. It put him at level 25 but he had to play through all the vanilla missions.

That's part of the new leveling system. You can infuse the blues into you purple gear. It will raise the light of the purple. Or you can just rock the blue. The biggest thing is to have your highest light gear on when decoding engrams.
