Drifter 851
I've been getting to the point of having to think about getting a new desktop PC soon. Mine was a good machine and served it's prpose well but turned 7 yrs old this year which in terms of computers is getting into it's golden years My old system was good for the time I bought it with dual core, 2.71ghz and windows xp. But have been having issues with it lately with having to replace the power supply, then overheating problems with a fan and heat paste going south, then the other day just out of the blue it reset itself to the welcome page like the day I first bought it. So that was the nail in the coffin for it IMO. So went out yesterday and paid a vist to the shop I buy most of my computer stuff from. It's a mom & pop store that is owned by a really nice Asian couple that build custom assembled PC's and sell then for a decent price. I came home with this.... Quad core AMD A10 6800k 4.4Ghz 8GB DDR3 / 1333 memory 1 TB hard drive Asus A55BM-E Motherboard DVD+ / RW drive Windows 7 64bit system So far I'm liking it. Taking a bit of getting use to Windows 7 coming from XP but seems like a nice operating system. I had to pass on a few other systems they had at other places because I did not want a machine that ran Windows 8. BO7H B4RRELS 2,453
I've got the AMD A10 5800K and it has been good to me. 8 Gigs of RAM is plenty. 1 TB HDD is perfect for storing things, but have you considered getting a smaller SSD to run Windows and other frequently used programs? I added one to my machine and it made a huge difference. It's been one of the best upgrades I've made with my PC. I don't know anything about that motherboard. No graphics card? Or is the 6800K APU like my 5800K is? I'd imagine it is, so that will work fine for work stuff. Is this just for work? No shooting bad guys? I really like Windows 7 as well, although I haven't used Windows 8. I went from Vista to 7. Have you checked the temps on everything (specifically the CPU) to see if it's staying cool? I had to add some extra fans and a bettere CPU cooler to my AMD chip because it was running hot. But, now it stays cool and kicks ass. Drifter 851
It's got a AMD Radeon HD8670D video/graphics card in it Tommy. I don;t game on my PC but I do some video editing with my Go Pro and such so she suggested this video card for that over the first unit I was looking at. Your lucky you didn't use Windows 8 at all lol, I do not know a single person that likes it. My Mom has it on her laptop I bought her two years ago and I can't find anything on it, it's such a terriable OS. So are you saying you keep Windows and other things on a different storage to save space/speed? Because I have a 2 TB Seagate XHD that I pretty much just keep pics and such on which I could move stuff over too. Haven't booted into bios to check any temps or anything yet. BO7H B4RRELS 2,453
From a quick google search, I believe the AMD Radeon HD8670D is the embedded video card in your A10 6800K. Those CPU chips are a CPU w/ a build in graphics cards. Mine is the same way, although I don't use it, I have a separate graphics cards. I don't know much about their performance. Have you used it for any of your video editing yet? Yeah... you would install Windows (and any other frequently used program) to your SSD, and then all pictures, musics, videos, etc. that you don't use often, but are just saving to your 1 TB HDD. SSD are much faster at pulling up information. My PC went from taking a minute or two to start up to only a few seconds. Windows loads up and is ready to go in about 10-15 seconds now. It's crazy how fast things load up on an SSD. So yeah, you'd have two hard drives, a SSD for Windows and then your 1 TB HDD for long term storage stuff. Diddums 4,346
Nice Steve! You don't need to boot into Bios to check temps, I'll post more later, busy building Ikea furniture. BO7H B4RRELS 2,453
I think Dave is referring to using software like CPUID to monitor your CPU's temperature. If the A10 6800K is anything like the 5800, then your temp readings are going to seem high. Many of the common temp monitoring programs don't read the A10 accurately for some reason. Drifter 851
I've seen a few of the temp monitor download programs but never downloaded one, I'll look into it though. Right now I'm replacing the Power supply, CPU fan, and a few other things on my old PC, I think I'm gonna get it back up and running and then hook it up to the 2nd monitor that way I can have two systems side by side Link to comment https://forevergaming.co.uk/forum/forums/topic/2131-new-pc-to-get-me-up-to-par/#findComment-51967 Share on other sites
Drifter 851
Managed to get the old one back up and running yesterday. I have them both side by side hooked up now. My old one has both DVI & VGA ports on the video card so I'm able to run both the new PC and the old PC off the same monitor. Now I can do all my personal & business stuff on the new one and have the 2nd one dedicated to free porn..errrr, I mean other stuff Between the two PC's, two laptops, and the 2TB XHD I think I have around 4+TB of storage now.
