It looks like South Carolina to the beach. Our offer on a vacation condo got accepted today, just have to call the owner tomorrow to finalize everything.

Where you going Myrtle Beach? Got a few good restaurant suggestions if you are headed there or near Charleston.

Everything's set.  We're rolling out as soon as my wife is ready.  First off, Holiday World for their Halloween light show.  Afterwards, driving about 1/3 of the way and stopping in Tennessee for the night, then on to Hilton Head in the morning.  I'm glad we went with South Carolina instead of Florida.  Weather.com says SC is going to be beautiful this week, northern FL is going to get rain most days.

WHEE!!!

Posting pictures now.  I'm not sure what the limit is, but I'm going to have to break it up some.

Made it!

Holding a live alligator was really cool.  They are squishier than you'd think, like they aren't really muscular but their skin is hard.  They didn't feel like I thought they would, and they are really strong when they try to twist out of your hands.  Seeing them blink with the clear eyelid is cool up close, too.  It was one of the highlights of the trip.

Great pics Doc. How did you like Hilton Head? I've always wanted to go, as I've heard nothing but great things about the area.

It depends on what you value, really.  We enjoyed it but I doubt we go back.  There's nothing else there that we wanted to do and didn't, and it wasn't standout enough to go again.

Pro's:  Clean, safe, many areas kept natural or set aside for parks, ordinances keep light pollution down so you can see the stars, decent amount of wildlife, a ton of bicycle and hiking trails, lodging costs are reasonable, traffic isn't bad.  Lots of available nature oriented activities, alligator tours, etc.  Reasonable amount of family friendly activities.

Con's:  Waves are pretty strong making swimming no fun but not really enough for surfing, shells are pulverized and not a great beach for collecting them, worst seafood restaurants in a seaside town I've ever seen, difficult to navigate without GPS and/or a guide because strong ordinances make all buildings look very similar (everything is brown and green, even things like CVS pharmacy or McDonald's that would ordinarily have their own paint scheme, all signs are small and wooden at ground level) No street lights makes navigating at night more difficult, vast majority of the town is tourism related and caters to upper end, so local restaurants and souvenir shops are really expensive.  Nothing of much significance or interest as a historical attraction as it was built as a resort town.  No "adventure" related activities like parasailing.

Our only real disappointment was trying 3 seafood restaurants and two were just plain bad and one was meh.  Compared to Florida, it was simply not up to par in that area.  It caters to people who don't know any better and are willing to spend $25 a plate on food that's worse than most chain restaurants like Red Lobster.
