Jason 1,245
I picked this router (asus rtn66u)up because I was having connection issues on old router and low wifi speeds. My Internet is 15mbs down, I'm getting around 5 on wifi speed tests. The range of the new router doesn't seem all that good. The wifi speed is still @ the 5mbs. Any thoughts on what to try? I downloaded new firmware for router already, and have been doing some research on what I should try. Just want some more insight. I'm not apposed to paying a bit more for better speed, they offer a few better levels, if that's needed. I'm just concerned that I never come close to reaching the 15mbs that's advertised. Also I know the mores stuff that is connected the slower the speed, but that slow? Maybe I'm expecting too much. Any tips appreciated. Thanks. cyberninja2601 1,106
Are you close to the router when you do the test? I have 50 Mb at home and I can get as little as 2 Mb in some rooms. Also check how you configure the wireless 802.11n is the most versatile. I've seen cases where I set my up in a certain way where the speed is very slow and I set it up for n at it works fine (although it shouldn't make a difference). Jason 1,245
I'll check the configuration when I get home. I've stayed within reasonable range, 1 room over for speed test. I don't expect to get great results at the other end of my house, but this thing seems like it has less range than my 40 dollar Walmart special. Could interference be a factor? I can't think of anything that's different. Change wifi channels maybe. Jason 1,245
Also I'd like it to be known that I know just enough about this stuff to be dangerous, so speak in small words if possible guys. I know just enough to get into the settings and find the things I want, then fuck it up real good. lol I'm getting a new modem/router combo soon, so I'm just here to learn. cyberninja2601 1,106
Interference is possible. Do you have neighbors close by? Routers usualy can support multiple channels and you need to make sure that you aren't using the same channels. Usually the channels assign automatically but it is possible to set them manually. I don't think that's the problem since you said your aren't particularly technical. It very hard to change those accidentally. Jason 1,245
I checked what channels people were using around me and changed to channel 1 and so far.... I have been getting 8 to 10mbps where I was getting 4, so fingers crossed.
