    Retro chat

Seeing as there is a little bit of interest (though this could turn into just Lee and myself talking about old games) I thought I would show off a couple of games in my Gameboy collection. I have never had them graded so for all I know they could be fake 😄 (And I realise as I'm uploading this I didn't take a photo of the pokemon crystal box but it's in pretty good condition. The pokemon games made up a good portion of my youth so it's probably one of my favourite parts of the collection (though I find it difficult to play the games / modern games these days with the exception of Arceus). But yeah thought it would get the ball rolling. I have a pearl blue? GBA SP that comes out every once in a while, sadly find it a bit uncomfortable to hold over longer spells. I tend to only keep hold of games I have particularly enjoyed so the bulk of my collection is made up of JRPG's / single player story driven games and a good portion of it still get's some game time every now and again. My megadrive broke so that's on my to get list again as those games are now sat in a cupboard gathering a nice thick layer of dust ^_^

  2. Afternoon all! A new story thread for us to keep everyone updated on all of our escapades and laughs along the way. Finally managed to get onto the DayZ PS4 server on Sunday and it was a nice surprise to see so many of us on it at the same time checking it out @ChaosGladiator @jordie1892 @Nutcuttlit @Luseth . I started my spawn in Novyshovo, or whatever its called. The furthest South West on the main land I believe. Sebba started to make his way to me, but within a few houses I felt pretty good finding some half decent loot, a full police outfit that always looks cool and is well insulated, and a couple of sharp things to bop Zombies - a Scythe being the one I ended up using first! For once, I felt confidently that I could meet Sebba at Msta, slightly North of my current destination. Probably should've waited for the truck, but anyhow, as I made my way I got caught up in a few Zombie fights. Luckily only got cut once and managed to find Seb's mahoosive truck which we then took to a solid car to swap materials and help go get Jordie considering the biggest vehicle in the game couldn't fit more than 2 people in it - FML 😅 After collecting Jordie and then Matt, we made our way to check out what the vendor looked like as Nutty was coming from the opposite side of the island at the same time. We got there and it was a like a gold mine! Anything you could need is in there. I think I like @jordie1892 's thoughts that we keep this locked down, and only really use it much later if it gets a successful turn out with FGers and also randomers. It made me really want to get going into the North West Airfield for more loot and kicking some zombies ass! However.... It had been raining - tons - since we left Electra where Jordie was, so we needed to get warm and dry our clothes. I rung my top out but saw Jordie next to the barrel fire and doing it that way. Seemed to make sense. I could just stand there and over time i'll get dry. Or so I thought. I stood close to it for a minute and then walked around for a moment but was still wet, so back to the barrel I went. Next thing I knew though, my screen went black. I thought the server needed a reset and we all got kicked off....until Jordie and Matt are laughing their tits off as i'm, apparently, on the floor, knocked out with my foot now dangled in the barrel. I have literally no idea what is going on. Everyone is laughing at my still body and i'm looking at a continued black screen. They start pouring water over me, jabbing me with meds, but no response. I start seeing a faint light but falling unconscious again. Next thing I know talk about my clothes and handcuffs comes out. This was what I couldn't see... I have to say, I'm just glad my videogame self was packing below, because clearly I was tied up, half naked and somehow losing life whilst lolz continued. No idea how this happened. Must've been getting too hot close to the fire but couldn't work it out. After 5 minutes, the server did restart, but I was then found back at the coast, so it clearly killed my half naked body through my left foot burning. I still had time to race into the nearest town, drink some water from a bottle, get sick, and then cut myself so much from Zombie fighting with said water bottle and died a second time. I'm now back in a coastal town, on top of a freight with zombies around me - again. Good, solid first day of Survival on the server with FG as per usual! 😅

Well, this is the point where my mind would love to go in absolutely every direction but ends up going nowhere 🤣 Great start off for the whole new section, I can see many new threads here that hopefully would be worthwhile. I should open by saying I absolutely love older games and enjoy building my collection in the hope one day i have that much spare time, I can start going through all of them and maybe even having people round for retro nights like I used to do even as a kid (17-21 I had 4-5 random TVs in my front room and had multiple all night gaming sessions with friends playing all kinds of stuff). Not sure what pictures wise to share though right now. I have around or just over 30 different types of consoles right now, but by far I love the Sega Mega Drive and SNES the most. No one can beat a game on a cartridge, its just the feeling of uniqueness and wonder when you have to blow the cartridge and slot before putting in and waiting for the relevant loading Sega logo to appear so you know its worked. Plus games back then were all about the fun factor and no extra frillyness that you had to worry about - looking at you loot boxes. One of my other favourite consoles is my Neo Geo CD. Maybe each one deseves their own little thread but for now i'll just say that this console makes you feel like you're back in the arcades playing those games you always wanted/needed £25 to play the whole game through, if you're lucky. Next step for my gaming area is waiting for my turn to have it get updated again, especially with the right storage as thats usually the one thing that stops me playing all my old games. Need a better and slicker system to plug in and play these old consoles without getting stuck with all the wires! 😅

    The 80s...

I'm not sure what people's ages are on here, I missed out on the 80s (born 1990) but I have a fascination for a lot of things from that era, music, gadgets, fashion etc and it's something that I have never really implemented into my life. However I am sat here watching the first episode of stranger things and thinking how cool it would be to have some 80s themed items around my home (I'm sure my wife would kill me!) Just curious if anyone has anything round their homes that is 80s styled or perhaps even retro, old gadgets, posters etc that they would be happy to show off? I could find this thread falls flat on it's face as I'm weird but hey who knows 😄

  6. So the likes of gamescom and E3 are dying out in favour of companies producing their own videos. Microsoft & Bethesda yesterday, Playstation and Nintendo do their State of play type of reveals while even PC gamer do their own reveal. Do any of you guy's watch them? I find them quite exciting seeing what's coming up (though there can often be some cringey moments in some of them) and I do dislike reveals being 3 or 4 years in advance just saying they are working on it without showing anything.

    The 80s...

Yeh the 80s seemed such a cool era but I was 84 so was only a kid of course. I still love the music now though. I like the idea of how professional sports people just mingled in with the public a bit more. And yes I think what you mean about the sports lee is that even the ones who made it lived a more normal lifestyle it seemed, eg snooker and darts players swigging pints and having a fag between games and footballers getting on the sesh every weekend 😂 but there were no camera phones to capture it back then

    The 80s...

I was born in 86, so missed most of the fun in the 80's. I would more class myself as a 90's child in terms of growing up and the general experience. Unfortunately I don't own anything as far as I'm aware of from that time period.

    EA at it again

No one likes EA's joke about singleplayer games, even EA | PC Gamer WWW.PCGAMER.COM EA dissed singleplayer games on Twitter, rankling current and former developers, plus everyone else. EA's shameful jibe would have a bit more merit if they actually had some good multiplayer titles to back up their stance but most of them are actually gutter-ranked games by the community and are average at best by critics. Some of their single player aspects such as Jedi Fallen Order and Titanfall 2 were highly regarded and you then compare that to tripe like Anthem. Most of the top games of the last gen have been single player focused. If it wasn't for EA's loot box model, they'd be long out of business or struggling at best.

  11. Playing fifa the other night and it was discussed what games are coming up over the next couple of months. The past 6 months has been somewhat quiet with a couple of exceptions so thought to raise awareness about games that are coming up it might be worth us just talking about games we are looking forward to turning up in the near future so just to begin things - Saints row - This looks like it might be a return to form with the last couple of games getting too wacky (is that a thing with saints row?) one of the noteworthy additions with this new game is that there is going to be the addition of drop in co op so you could play through the main game with a friend! Hogwarts legacy - My wife is a huge fan of the series and I enjoyed it growing up. This looks like it could be the harry potter game everyone always wanted though it has been marred over the past year with some of J.K Rowlings opinions. That won't personally stop me and I am quite excited for this. Marvels midnight suns - This is basically x-com with a marvel skin on it so far as I can tell. The recent x-com games have been brilliant so I can see this doing well. Stalker - The original games were great so with the financial backing of microsoft I can see this really doing well. A true competitor to Fallout and let's be honest it won't take them much to be less buggy! Final Fantasy XVI & VII Rebirth - I'm a huge fan of the series so these 2 are very high on my to buy list, I'm not really sure they need much of an introduction with how well known the series is.

I know there are so many people that are affected by Cancer, including Kim whose auntie had a Bowel Cancer. If you would like to donate to this very worthy cause the link is below. If you would like to donate in memory of someone Kim is writing the names of those that want this on her Cancer Research t-shirt which she is wearing when doing the walks. Please support her amd this amazing charity if you can, thank you 🙂🙂 https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/kims-walk-100-miles-challenge-giving-page-12

  13. So there has been a rise in modern versions of retro consoles, thinking PS1 mini and the such, typically I don't buy these but one thing I did pick up recently was an xbox controller made to feel and look like the original Duke controller. It's bulky but there is just something about gaming on it (mostly used for Fallout 76 at the moment). Just wondering what tech you guy's have that's a modern take on a classic (I think I saw someone mention the 8bitdo controllers elsewhere? The photo is of my modern duke controller, nice little novelty with this version is not only is it purple but it plays the opening scene from when you first meet Cortana in the original Halo game each time it starts up. (Please excuse the grubbiness my daughter tends to hold this one when she thinks she is gaming with me 😄 )

Started on Commodore 64 although had a few Nintendo Game&Watch single players, of which donkey kong was epic. Missed the NES but picked up a SNES, with my brother owning the Sega Mega Drive. Passed on the Saturn and Dreancast but picked up the PS1, Tomb Raider and Gran Turismo were the first games I had for that. Also had the N64 which still has some of my best gaming memories. Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Ocarina of Time and many more. Next came the Gamecube, for which Resident Evil 4 and Eternal Darkness were my standout titles. PS2 was epic for Black, GTA Vice City and San Andreas. Passed on the PS3 and went with the Xbox 360. My favourite console of all time. I had two standard ones and finished with the slim. MW2 and Black Ops 1, Oblivion, Bioshock 1 and 2, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, GTA4 and more....an almost endless list of great titles. PS4 and Switch aren't retro quite yet, so that'll do 🙂

@Tar-Eruntalion golden sun is a JRPG, it had 3 games (the first 2 on the GBA were the best of the 3) but it had some brilliantly creative puzzles within the dungeons you explored and the story was really quite good. It was turn based and looked surprisingly good for such a little handheld!# The Zelda games are on my to buy list, my gameboy collection is rather small, I think because I have held off on picking games up just because I like complete copies (though that is becoming an increasingly expensive want so I may have to lower my expectations at some point). @Antpool84 it was a great way to kill hours back then, the older games were a major grindfest (not so these days)

nice collection @Luseth , i see you are a fan of pokemon, i think i vaguely remember golden sun, what was it about? anyway here is my gameboy collection, i played these games until i got a pc and later a ps3 zelda and warrioland though were kicking my ass so much when i was younger, they had some very difficult parts, i remember i was completely stuck on some dungeon/puzzle of zelda and had abandoned the game and only finished it very recently after i saw a walkthrough, so yeah that game took me more than 10 years to finish😅

  20. Great thread @Luseth . A lot of FGers may have put some of what they do in their PPRs over the years but I think things always change for some people. Not me though, lol. I work in Projects/Change. Yep, vague as hell and the most transferable thing you could probably do. I'm a Change Lead at a UK Building Society. Been here for 18 years come 27th September. I'd say my job feels very much like what you might ask like a consultant to do to come and help problem solving and get decisions on certain technology, processes and organisation structure/people. It has been varied for the past 10 years, and I always feel really lucky that I've had chance to work on the biggest projects/programmes we've done in all that time. I'm currently on the biggest one at the moment which is delivering software for mortgage brokers and staff to use with customers on mortgages. On the subject of our current jobs, thought i'd also mention that Covid has changed my mindset even further - Working from Home pretty much permanently although you never know how long that may last. Its done wonders for me mentally. Seeing the kids and wife so much more than I did. I don't feel as guilty as i did and I really am a big believer in living your life to the fullest - which means getting the best work/life balance you can find. Very rarely we find a job to live for as we mostly work to live. I'm definitely in the camp of work hard but don't allow anything to get in the way of real important shizzle things happening in life...which could even be what we're gaming on tonight! 🤣😎

  22. E3 has definitely taken a hit with the breakaway events particularly after Covid. Doesn't surprise me that companies want to do their own show - they are highly established to get media interest, don't have to share their show with anyone, can do as they wish plus they aren't under any time limitations. I still think these shows will exist for tradition but they will be sandwiched it between the standalone events which will become the showpiece for the media. I tend to only watch the highlights or the standout trailers for these though as I don't have much time or patience to be sitting through all these presentations especially if its for games or devs I am not interested in.

  23. Sorry but wasn't there already a remaster for PS4, why does there need to be another iteration. This is bonkers and show's the direction of the industry whilst a lot of the players continues to eat it up. I hope it bombs I really do. We need new IP's not remakes and remasters of existing games, with the current trend every time we move forwards in tv technology we will just get the next generation of the same games... Absurd...

  24. as someone that still has a ps3 and played it recently for the 1st time, in my opinion it's a waste of a remake, the game is still beautiful, it's not like it has early 2000 graphics, but i can understand the reason since all ps3 games are unportable to pc from what i have read cause of the monstrocity that the ps3 architecture/os etc was

  26. Let's get a brand new thread up where we share what you either buy or even just find from a retro point of view. I'll go first! After Matt's @Luseth recent annoyance of reminding me i've been neglecting my older video games for a while, I had a think what i'd like to get hold of and managed to get the following: I've always loved the film Universal Soldier, so I had to grab a version of the Mega Drive game to check it out. I used to play a lot of a chipped version of Everybody's Golf - it has the best crazy golf multiplayer game on it so looking forward to having a few local matches with wehoever I can get round! I'm also wanting to complete a few more Mega Drive games so Indiana Jones seemed a perfect one given it has 5 levels within the whole game. Again, another game born off the films I used to love. What's everyone else been finding?

I had the chance to try this out during the Steam Next Fest and I'll definetly pick it up once it releases. Reminds me a lot of Blasphemous, also a 2D metroidvania that released sometime last year. It has a very gothic/Castlevania type look to it and the gameplay is fairly tight. I can already tell I'll be dropping some F-Bombs while playing this one.

    The 80s...

Whilst born in the 80s, I really wished I was old enough to experience it in full flow. The Disco's, the nightclubs, the extravagant and hilarious outfits and mullets. Plus, I think there was probably a lot more opportunity when it came to sport and maybe making it as a professional in some of them. I'm not sure how much 80s stuff I have but I listen to a ton of music from that era. My probably my NES and Master System's come close as what I own. We used to have a Lamp from my Grandads that we put a new shade on it but the bottom was definitely 80s style. In the loft now, so i'll try and find it and share some pics when I can.

  29. So my current focus is gameboy related as i am a bit skint atm so looking out for cheaper games that i want in my collection (hoping for a big splurge on retro stuff when my wife returns to work in january). My last purchase was this - The gbc version is more of a traditional rpg in the mould that I quite enjoy and this cost me less than a fiver (i have just put a bid on chamber of secrets gbc on ebay as well). The games went in a different route once they hit the gba

  30. I can appreciate that, the number of remasters and remakes coming through have sort of stagnated the games industry. People are buying them because there is nothing else but then developers keep making them knowing that it's an easy return and a fairly safe bet. I have a fair few games in my backlog at the moment but generally because they are so similar to what I have played recently it's difficult to muster up the enthusiasm to play them. It's another plus for retro games in that the variety is broader and much more diverse with ideas and the such.

Hellsinger - Shoot to the beat awesomeness with metal soundtrack. Basically looking forward to rediscovering my games on ultra settings!

  32. So personally I always prefer to play on original consoles and with original games where possible but I am a little more flexible than some people I think as I can appreciate that there are instances where emulation really comes into it's own, just a couple of scenarios where I have benefitted from it - - I am due to go on a caravan holiday, start of July and I plan to take my GPD XD so that I can play some older games without having to lug the original hardware away with me! - English translations, there are a couple of games I always wanted to play but never could because they never got released outside of Japan so there was never an English version. Since the original release however there have been fan made translations which have allowed me to enjoy the games. One of these for me being shining force 3 parts 2 and 3. - The other thought that often comes across is cost, playing and collecting older games is certainly not an affordable hobby these days and it's only going to get more expensive with some games becoming rarer or more sought after. So I can appreciate there will be people who won't ever get the opportunity to appreciate some games without emulation which would seem a shame.

  34. Do I wade in? 😅 Its probably well known here now that I just don't like emulation, but that doesn't mean it has to be anyone else opinion too. I think there's some solid reasons why you would do it, just like all of the above @Luseth @J4MES OX4D and @Spacedeck have mentioned. I think the key difference is you've thought about what and why to do it before just dipping into emulators. I have a thought of a separate article I might start writing up about that touches on exclusivity and potential things connected to this that may impact on the next crash. For me, playing older games isn't about the WOW factor you get when a game initially comes out so we all learn at the same time, as clearly its been out for years. So its the whole experience i'm looking for. For example, @Findmartin came round mine last night and its about selecting a game to play, looking at the game cases and seeing what jumps out at us that could be good fun. Then its about getting the unique controller and wires unwrapped, checking the memory card storage in case we get engrossed and want to save a game. Or if its cartridge its blowing the dust off it, opening the tray and doing the same there. Then game wise getting the original game colours, and sounds. I think more so you can see its about having the console and that experience in one moment. Nothing beats that nostalgia and feeling - and it lasts way longer when you can tangibly feel the game and console in front of you. Where I start to adopt some 'emulator-ish' tendencies is through the last points I make about game colours and sounds. Harold tocuhes on it abit above where we haven't got CRT TVs just lying around (mainly because they have an arse built like optimus prime) so what i've bought a few years ago is a HDMI upscaler. In some ways i had to because my TV can take aerial but the ice and snow mario kart race on the SNES just wouldn't show correctly. With an Upscaler it looks pristine and just like what we used to play as kids. Still using the same unique SNES controllers. Whilst I can joke from time to time, never feel ashamed to use emulators when it seems practical to use them due to how your life is. I'm lucky enough to own many of mine as I grew up so still have them. I wish people would not jump on the bandwagon of making money out of old games as it is pricing me out what I love to do, but i'll carry on where i can obtaining old games that aren't overpriced to enjoy them in my own home with as close as an experience it would've been if I had bought the game when it originally came out.

  35. Does feel huge and i love space combined with the building elements. Remains to be seen if this is likely to slip into 2024 though as its so big I wouldn't be surprised. Maybe by then I'd have bought the latest Xbox. It does look like it serve well on PC more so though, esepcially the chop and change custom building elements. Good points. I think in a game its fair to expect some planets will be of a similar ilk, but thats okay. Just depends on how much unique and varied waypoints or key points of interest each one will have that is different. The challenge is definitely to make it feel different to No Mans Sky as it needs to stand out on its own rather than just more of NMS as you may as well invest time into that instead.

  41. I make electrical enclosures for building/traffic infrastructure. One job i finished just last year was about 20 big units for the Toronto LRT line. That's the "pays the bills" job. The fun one is doing audio/video recently for Six Sides of Gaming, but soon for Dice To Pixels in the very near future. I also write and very slowly create some music as a hobby that I'll eventually get into a self published record at some point.

  42. Yes @Diddums, odds are electric will play a bigger role but by all accounts i think its too early to tell where things are going for us as mechanical designers as far as where the energy will come from. (I have studied some electrical units too and would like to learn both if for nothing more than understanding both sides will only help the design process). You may have seen different but from my point of view a lot of the heating focus has been around heat networks so that the gas boilers can be swapped out down the line, its just a change of heat source then (and its fairly efficient combined with HIU’s). Its the heat source that people are still not sure of, we have worked quite closely with the guys that have written CP1 for CIBSE and been some of the early adopters of their revised guidance (in fact we were installing heat networks based on the Danish standards prior to CIBSE adopti g it and creating their version (though back then I only cadded it all!) As far as what we do as a business we are on the install side as well so typically the types of systems we install are somewhat dictated to us and we make it work (we are in the process of working on and installing our first net zero carbon project utilising underfloor heating and ground source heat pumps). The communal vent is much more traditional but the energy useage is offset by solar panels on the roof etc. So we are getting our foot in the door as a company 🙂 But as I say personally the design elements of a project is still relatively new to me (in fact I often think I might enjoy the BIM side of things more so my career path could change again down the road and my director did hint the other day that I could have the opportunity to lead that aspect of the business, though thats all for discussion yet) I am finding it funny how I have come on this forum and found someone I could discuss all this with, I always find everyone looks at me funny when i say what I do. Considering how much we rely on these systems for comfort and yet so few people know what it involves (like a lot of careers im sure!) Sorry for the long reply! 😁

  46. With Modern Warfare II’s launch fast approaching, some questions remain; what strides are Infinity Ward taking to make Modern Warfare II a fresh experience? Similar to its predecessor, Infinity Ward plans to refine its parkour system, drawing inspiration from Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst, as well as with the introduction of all-new features and mechanics; here’s the scoop! With Modern Warfare II’s multiplayer maps sticking to a more tight and hard-lined approach to level design; players will be able to meddle with these mechanics in Warzone 2, putting these new features to the test in a larger, more variable playground; using the environment to your advantage! Movement Ladders & Ropes With Ladders, you’ll be able to vertically position the equipment alongside walls, containers, and buildings; though if not supported, it will fall and shatter, causing the Field Upgrade to reset. For Ropes, You’ll be able to repel down, and scale up buildings with this tool. whilst repelling, players can also swing through windows, or into collapsed walls. You can also attach the rope to vehicles and players, allowing for a quick getaway for downed players. Shifting & Strafing Strafing lets you move sideways in any direction, as well as backwards. Say you get too close to a threat, or you turn a corner where you’re at a disadvantage, you can shift out of the area to clear some space and get a better view of your options and surroundings. Wall-climb Players will be able to vertically clamber up walls, this feature is determined by the height of the platform you’re trying to reach and mount. Ledge-hanging You’ll be able to hang off and grab onto ledges. Call of Duty’s newest mechanic that allows players to reach for impracticable platforms, also reduces fall damage. Players will also be able to use their sidearm whilst ledge-hanging. Sliding Sliding has since been revised, allowing for players to now slide into a prone position, as well as down angled inclines and slopes. Bunny-hopping Bunny-hopping is dependent on the height a player falls from; the greater the height, the more speed boost you will gain onto your bunny-hop. Gameplay features Exigency hip-fire (Quick sidearm draw) A feature that allows you to quickly switch to your sidearm with one hand, this can also be done with lethals. Suppressor Meter You can change the size of suppressors and depending on the size it’ll affect recoil, damage, and ranges. There’ll exist a meter that players will be able to mess with and find their balance. Weapon handling (Grips) An operator will have the option of choosing between a set of different tactical handlings and techniques; this can affect the accuracy and speed of a weapon, some examples include a Magwell Grip, and C-Clamp Grip. Magazine check animation -For modes with limited heads-up-display (HUD), you’ll be able to inspect a weapons magazine count. Reticle ammunition count New design where reticles display a weapons ammo count, seen with revolvers and shotguns. These refined and renewed mechanics will give fans a new learning-curve, that’ll allow players to effectively interact with, practice, and master stringing together unfamiliar gameplay features.

  47. I don't tend to watch them mainly most games that get revealed are different when they get released but I do watch them when there's a big game coming out.

  48. Man, I'm seriously getting sick of these remakes/remasters lately. I've been there and done that. I don't care if it's wearing a nicer "suit." We need some new IPs and ideas.

  49. I'm just hoping it's like the old MW2/MW3 playing style as the last COD I really enjoyed was BOPS 3.

    Gotham Knights

It's my first time finding out that the people behind this game aren't the same ones as the Arkham series of games — I think I now know why you guys are apprehensive. I am now too hehe. But yeah, I'm optimistic too. Arkham Knight was pretty awesome but I hated that you needed to complete the game on hard to see the actual ending. Requiring the player to play the game again for the full story is bad enough for me, but having them play hard mode to see what an ending that's supposedly already served upfront is, I think, bad design. Don't get me wrong, if you enjoyed it, that's awesome — no issues with that of course! Just that after that it felt like there's a big gaping hole for good DC games they need to fill up so they bring back the goodness of Arkham Asylum and City. Like all of you guys, I'm hoping it's this one. I have already pre-ordered it so there's no backing out. 🤣
