  2. I make electrical enclosures for building/traffic infrastructure. One job i finished just last year was about 20 big units for the Toronto LRT line. That's the "pays the bills" job. The fun one is doing audio/video recently for Six Sides of Gaming, but soon for Dice To Pixels in the very near future. I also write and very slowly create some music as a hobby that I'll eventually get into a self published record at some point.

  3. Next Fest is happening right now on Steam, which allows you to play some demo's of upcoming games. I know a few of you have posted topics about some of them, but feel free to throw some more that have caught your eyes here. A few that @Rumelylady and I have downloaded are Moonscars, Tyrant's Blessing, Cult of the Lamb, Spirit Tea, Melatonin, and Naiad. I will do some more in depth posts about ones I try at some point.

  4. I hope you all had a great day! Did you get a break or spend the day with your kids? What did you get up to? I received a lovely home made card but have spent the day being a Dad. Cleaning the room, vaccing, countless washing, caring for my youngest daughter who's got sickness and runny poos... fun day. Looks like it's a call to the Doctors in the morning as she just isn't improving. Anyway, hope you all had a great day (not just Dad's!).

  5. We had heat pumps at one of my last buildings, the place didn't even have a gas meter, it was quite fascinating tbh. They're a lot more potent than people think, although I'm not entirely sold on the reliability yet.

  6. I take it the boiler swap out is for ASHP or similar and you have to ensure the network is sized large enough to cope with low grade heat? This is my worry with the current "No new gas boilers from 2030 (I think that's the date) " The politicians think it's wonderful but who will tell Joe Public it's not a straight swop? Bigger radiators will be needed and possibly bigger pipework in addition to probable thermal insulation upgrades to the property structure. Looking ahead, are our street electrical infrastructures man enough to suddenly cope with the extra load from ASHP? It obviously won't happen over night but.... Also how would the additional loading impact the phase sharing in the street? My other big concern, whenever I see big new housing developments announced, is..... I hope you've checked the local drainage / water / utility services for capacity. They didn't do that once in my area to a big development and we had months of roadworks while they upgraded the gas mains. No-one admitted it but you didn't need to be a rocket scientist (just a services engineer!) to figure it out!

  7. Yes @Diddums, odds are electric will play a bigger role but by all accounts i think its too early to tell where things are going for us as mechanical designers as far as where the energy will come from. (I have studied some electrical units too and would like to learn both if for nothing more than understanding both sides will only help the design process). You may have seen different but from my point of view a lot of the heating focus has been around heat networks so that the gas boilers can be swapped out down the line, its just a change of heat source then (and its fairly efficient combined with HIU’s). Its the heat source that people are still not sure of, we have worked quite closely with the guys that have written CP1 for CIBSE and been some of the early adopters of their revised guidance (in fact we were installing heat networks based on the Danish standards prior to CIBSE adopti g it and creating their version (though back then I only cadded it all!) As far as what we do as a business we are on the install side as well so typically the types of systems we install are somewhat dictated to us and we make it work (we are in the process of working on and installing our first net zero carbon project utilising underfloor heating and ground source heat pumps). The communal vent is much more traditional but the energy useage is offset by solar panels on the roof etc. So we are getting our foot in the door as a company 🙂 But as I say personally the design elements of a project is still relatively new to me (in fact I often think I might enjoy the BIM side of things more so my career path could change again down the road and my director did hint the other day that I could have the opportunity to lead that aspect of the business, though thats all for discussion yet) I am finding it funny how I have come on this forum and found someone I could discuss all this with, I always find everyone looks at me funny when i say what I do. Considering how much we rely on these systems for comfort and yet so few people know what it involves (like a lot of careers im sure!) Sorry for the long reply! 😁

  8. Ah, so you design all the stuff I used to install and now look after. I'm an HVAC installer by trade, pipe fitting being my speciality. I am no longer on the tools however and manage a team of engineers instead. Do yourself a favour and concentrate on energy, that's where the world is heading. In my last building I oversaw the installation of an Openblue system and saved my client £1m in the first year, with the prospect of another £1m over the next three. It was extremely intensive and took a lot of dedication but the results are worth it. This was one single building, the only building in London to have a running track on the roof and the first building in the client's portfolio to have free cooling, photovoltaiv solar, thermal solar and energy recovery in the air handling units. It's a benchmark for most of their portfolio now, interesting stuff 🙂

  9. This has been called the "spiritual successor" to Dead Space. The lead was the individual that created that IP and has since moved on to create this studio and IP. Should be something to look to for anyone that was a fan of that series.

  10. It ends tomorrow (20.06 at 18:00 GMT/10am PST) which is a shame so any lingering demos anyone wants to try, download them ASAP because most will get removed when the event is over. I tried about 13 games in the end - here's a few picks from what I remember:- Gloomwood - a spiritual successor to the first two Thief games. Trepang2 - awful name but as close to F.E.A.R as we'll likely ever get. Needs some fine tuning but otherwise it looks fantastic! Metal: Hellsinger - really well made game. Not quite as fluid as I would've hoped but the soundtrack is awesome and the visuals look really good Some others:- Agent 64: Spies Never Die - A love letter to Goldeneye but not quite there. Has its moments but the UI is bland, the visuals look a bit washed and the mechanics aren't as authentic as I would've hoped. Cult of the Lamb - interesting rogue-lite with a unique style but the controls need desperate rebinding and I'm not entirely sold on the gameplay depth. Old Skies - big fan of WadjetEye games and their range of point and click titles. This one is a step up visually but the gameplay feels slow and I wasn't terrible intrigued by it all. Alaskan Truck Simulator - very disappointing in most departments. It was never going to touch SCS's range of simulators but this one misses the mark on almost everything.

  11. they require regular maintenance, like you could get away for 5 years without a service on your boiler, you do that with a heat pump and it needs replacing. @Plumbers Crack a heat network is designed with a hot water buffer vessel so the idea is you need to keep that at 70 degrees (it can be lower and then a hiu would top up the difference where required for hot water ising electricity) and there is a diversity calculation to determine the amount of heat energy you need to put into keeping the buffer vessel at that temperature depending on the number of apartments / spaces that require heating. The radiators are then sized on the anticipated flow and return temperature's so if it is designed from the off based on utilising ground source it wouldnt be an issue (though admittedly it isnt always the case). We haven't done it yet but 5th gen heat networks do utilise ground source heat pumps. It’s clever stuff when done correctly but I don't think a lot of them are being done based on ground source (you wont get a buffer vessel to stay at 70 with just ground source, it would need an additional heat source such as biomass boilers or hydrogen which most modern boilers that we install are capable of with only minor changes internally). But that goes back to my original comment that I am not sure the industry is set on one single direction currently.

  12. Recorded this about 6 months ago, was asked by a guy I met on DayZ looong ago to join a server he played on to help his group raid some trash talkers. These guys had 2 layers of walls around the whole farm area just next to Zelenogorsk on the west side, massive base and tons of lag to go with it. Our group had 7 or 8 people, 2 of our guys died, the other group had 6. We wiped them completely. Sadly no voice recording in this as I hadn't figured out the ps5 settings yet 😅

  13. I quite enjoyed the demo. Certainly seems a well-made game with great visuals and music. Wish the mechanics were a little more fluid and there was a bit more variety and movement with the AI but on the whole it's definitely one to watch.

  14. It's sounding like this will be similar to the Outer Worlds with a lot more space exploration. Probably a more serious tone too. I can't wait for the day 1 patch that makes it playable. Lol

  17. Great thread @Luseth . A lot of FGers may have put some of what they do in their PPRs over the years but I think things always change for some people. Not me though, lol. I work in Projects/Change. Yep, vague as hell and the most transferable thing you could probably do. I'm a Change Lead at a UK Building Society. Been here for 18 years come 27th September. I'd say my job feels very much like what you might ask like a consultant to do to come and help problem solving and get decisions on certain technology, processes and organisation structure/people. It has been varied for the past 10 years, and I always feel really lucky that I've had chance to work on the biggest projects/programmes we've done in all that time. I'm currently on the biggest one at the moment which is delivering software for mortgage brokers and staff to use with customers on mortgages. On the subject of our current jobs, thought i'd also mention that Covid has changed my mindset even further - Working from Home pretty much permanently although you never know how long that may last. Its done wonders for me mentally. Seeing the kids and wife so much more than I did. I don't feel as guilty as i did and I really am a big believer in living your life to the fullest - which means getting the best work/life balance you can find. Very rarely we find a job to live for as we mostly work to live. I'm definitely in the camp of work hard but don't allow anything to get in the way of real important shizzle things happening in life...which could even be what we're gaming on tonight! 🤣😎

  18. I've tried Stadia and to be fair to them, the controller feels nice and I had a much better experience streaming through Stadia over WiFi, than I did using Microsoft's streaming service through GamePass on an ethernet connected to the pc!

  28. And after last night us trying the multiplayer story mode, that was pretty spot on! And why we loved it so much. No overthinking, just some good old, in the moment gaming fun. The music is absolutely superb and the revive system has been implemented fantastically. Something you would never expect to see in a revamped game like this.

  29. Going this way will I think work, for a while. The industry as a whole is entering the digital/cloud space so I expect a huge boom before the next gaming crash. It kind of saturates the field and then I feel gaming development could become lazy as things will be limited in a way to meet the capacity of what these TVs can deliver. I do want to be more positive about it all, just trying to see what the benefit is. We must evolve the times rather than reject change, but it does start to feel like we already on the course to a huge saturation of DDD rental gaming.

    Starfield Gameplay

Been having a look around at the general reception and it actually seems a bit of a mixed bag. I'm certainly taking the visuals with a pinch of salt but the game looks pretty decent for such an old engine. The biggest all-round worry seems to be the outdated combat - the demo doesn't even demonstrate ADS which is strange. I know they usually get PR clowns to show games off but it be weird if they did this without the person ever aiming down the sights. The scavenging/crafting seems very much like No Mans Sky but doesn't look all that interesting. The big thing will be the planets - although there's supposed to be 1,000, the general expectation is there being about 10 which are handcrafted with others either being generated or are just simple resource dumps. I'm really not sure if I've seen enough ambition or innovation so far that would make this a standout current-gen title. The RPG and Story aspects will have to be on far with Fallout becuase I don't think a No Mans Sky collect-a-thon with generated planets will really impress all that much.

  34. Maaaaaaaateee @Riff Machine , it really IS AWESOME!! I absolutely love that the game plays and feels so much like the old classic side scroller, but it also feels refreshed, extra moves and details. Actual content to replay and the fact it is 6 Player co-op online is incredible. Also, I really love the extra detail on the Story mode that it has a World Map, very similar to how Super Mario World would have, which i'm really impressed by. For £18 it is an absolute steal of a buy. Couldn't agree more Chad.

  35. Straight up, If you've played the classic TMNT arcade games or Turtles in Time... GET THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!! This plays and feels just like those classics we all grew up with. The original voice cast (Minus James Avery R.I.P.) has returned to their respected voices and its such a flash back. Online co-op and up to 6 players! It's so damn good!

  36. I disagree on this. I think it could do quite well. Stadia's business model was poor, you had to pay full price for a game you didn't really own. Xbox Game Pass library for a monthly fee is a different kettle of fish. Infrastructure and latency will be a factor for sure but I do see people buying into it... if it works...

  38. This past week, @Rumelylady and Myself were in Columbus Ohio for Origins Game Fair 2022, working with Six Sides of Gaming to provide the A/V feed as well as streaming from the main hall of the con. It was both our first time in Columbus and I really liked the city as a whole. Great people and some amazing food in and around the convention centre/downtown core. The con itself was shrouded in some controversy thanks in no small part to two of the "Special Guests" having they're true colors revealed to the TTRPG community by a large amount of people sharing their experiences with these two, and just how horrible, disrespectful, and unprofessional they've both been when working with them in the past. Needless to say, It was a topic of discussion for a lot of people on the show floor as most were trying to distance themselves from them. Both people in question were removed from all appearances they were scheduled to make and replaced rather quickly by some other more professional people in the industry. Aside from that, The turn out suffered as well thanks to a mask mandate being in place for the convention. A lot of people that were going to attend cancelled due to the back and forth by the con with regards to this. Shame really, as they missed a pretty good show. Our job went off without a hitch. Audio/Video quality for the sow was top notch and we were praised for our work we put into it. Our streaming however was fairly lacklustre due to one member of the company failing to obtain people for most of our convention programming. Attendance was mediocre, but that was the case for most of the convention as a whole. A lot of demo room, panels, performances, and even the costume contest (Which had some amazing outfits) all had a poor showing but fun was had none the less. To get into everything from the floor here would take a lot, so I'll choose a couple things that we bought that really caught our eyes. First was a board game called Wonder Book by DV Games Wonder Book Board Game WWW.WONDERBOOK-BOARDGAME.COM This one caught our eyes right away thanks to the creative way they've implemented the game board. It opens up like a book, but as you progress through the chapters of the game, It turns into a big pop up book with movable tabs! It's truly something you have to see up close to appreciate, and we were happy to buy this from them. The other was various sets of dice and cards by a group called Inkwell Ideas https://inkwellideas.com/ They had an assortments of dice and cards that created dungeon maps, terrain, and NPCs for random TTRPG adventures that really blew us away. There's so many options you could end up with using these products and it really expands what can be done with a random generated TTRPG adventure setting using say 5E rules. We spend a lot of money here. Excellent products that I would recommend to any TTRPG game master looking to add a few things to their bag of tricks. It was a fun week, but also the last we will have working with Six Sides of Gaming. A lot of issues have caused Sarah, Myself and our Friend Adrian to step away, BUT... We have already begun the work to start our next endeavour based around our podcast called Dice to Pixels. We will be starting this up within the next few weeks and we fully intend to fire up some TTRPG streams and some boardgames play-through and walkthroughs as well. All in all, Origins was good especially thanks to some of the people we had the chance to hang out with and enjoy together. Columbus was a nice city that I would 100% return to and who knows, Maybe we will be back next year to do the same thing. Only with our new group. Cheers Folks!
