Right, there seems to be a lot of choices for Battlefield 2042 and considering it looks like it will be a popular game at FG, we should all double check what we're buying as in some instances when we look to put in big Private matches (cos we will) or just MP groups, we will need the right version to play together.

Essentially the game is cross play but only with their corresponding current generation platforms. So, what this means is (if turned on):

  • PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S owners will all be able to play together - max match sizes of 128 players
  • PS4 and Xbox One owners will be able to play together - max match size of 64 players

Pre-ordering ANY version will get you beta access which is still tbc when it will take place and the 'Pre-order pack' which includes:

  • Baku ACB-90 Epic Melee Takedown Knife
  • Mr. Chompy Epic Weapon Charm
  • Landfall Player Card Background and Old Guard Tag

A bit of info on the different versions:

Standard Edition - PS4 / Xbox One

  • Digital Version £59.99
  • Physical Version £54.99 (checked via GAME)
    • Base game
    • Pre-order pack

Standard Edition - PS5 / Xbox One S / PC

  • Digital Version £69.99
  • Physical Version £64.99 (checked via GAME)
    • Base game
    • Pre-order pack
    • Open Beta Early Access

Gold Edition (Cross-Gen version)

  • Digital Version £89.99
  • NO Physical Version
    • Base Game for PS4/Xbox One
    • Base Game for PS5/Xbox Series X
    • Pre-order pack
    • Open Beta Early Access
    • 7 Days Early Access
    • Year 1 Season Pass - 4 New Specialists (1 per Season), 4 Battle Passes (1 per Season), and 3 Epic Skin Bundles (”Blistered Earth”, ”Tempest”, and ”Cold Blood”)

Ultimate Edition

  • Digital Version £109.99
  • NO Physical Version
    • Base Game for PS4/Xbox One
    • Base Game for PS5/Xbox Series X
    • Pre-order pack
    • Open Beta Early Access
    • 7 Days Early Access
    • Year 1 Season Pass - 4 New Specialists (1 per Season), 4 Battle Passes (1 per Season), and 3 Epic Skin Bundles (”Blistered Earth”, ”Tempest”, and ”Cold Blood”)
    • Midnight Ultimate Bundle
    • Official Digital Artbook
    • Exclusive Digital Soundtrack

Its good to know that if you have EA Play, you can save 10% on the final price of any version e.g. £9 off Gold edition so it is £81 rather than £90

What this all means is that with our FG playerbase largely 70% PS4 and 30% PS5 (with some dregs on PC too 😄), there are things to consider. At £90 the Gold Edition is very steep, £20 more than the standard new gen version, however this gets you both versions of the game to be able to play with previous gen folks and pays for the first season pass - which are usually anywhere between £20-40 depending on game on content. They unfortunately don't offer an edition that just gives you the cross play bundle, which arguably would've only been £10 more.

It would be great to if everyone could vote what they are likely to buy soon because I would much prefer to be buying the same version that everyone else is playing over and above the graphic updates I would get on PS5. Same thought process for the PC folk, as it could be worthwhile buying a later new gen version a few months later when the game has decreased in price and possibly an upgrade is offered on its own.

If I could find the cash then I would get the Gold version but with other games out around the same time I know i'm not the only one who has to think of the pennies for everything we have got coming our way for the rest of the year! So definitely could dip for just the physical PS4 edition as its £35 cheaper!

End goal is I just want people at FG to feel like we can all play together, so please share your views on the poll and below!

Nice post, very informative!

Don't think I'll be getting the Gold version as I don't have a PS5 and don't see myself purchasing one till the price becomes more affordable. However I will be getting the standard version for PS4, I presume sometime after the initial release however.

I'll buy whatever. If peeps are still on PS4, I'm happy to buy the cross platform version, but if I do and they never play with me, I'll drive to their houses and nick all their socks off their washing lines.

This may be a stupid question…..

So to play with ps4 folks do we need to have both versions installed on our HD?  If that’s the case I’m definitely just getting the ps5 copy because I just don’t have the space for that.

Yes, you need both installed and you switch between game versions to play with people. However, what I would say is (just like in the PS5 tips topic) if you have a PS5 you need an external hard drive as the internal storage you were always going to fill up. Good news is if you had one on your PS4 then you can just unplug and plug into your PS5 to use and it'll store the PS4 version in that leaving the internal space freed up for further PS5 games. Please say you have one already as i'm not sure how you've coped playing 1-2 games on the PS4 due to the size of COD 😄

I'll be getting it on PC most likely as it will have the biggest choice of servers and it's basically the series home platform with brilliant M+K functionality. Can also crossplay with the current gen of consoles which is great and I could probably grab it for under £36 which is basically half of what I'd pay for the PS5 version.

Yeah. That’s what I kinda thought.

I have one but it’s fucked up. I am trying to wait till the beta ends for the internal hdd and I’ll buy one of them.

I've got the standard PS5 version ordered and most probably will be the version I'll stick with.  I can understand getting the gold edition if you're on last gen and looking to upgrade at some point but harder to justify getting the gold version to be able to play last gen.

I did think about getting the ultimate version as if it's good I'd be looking at getting the season passes however I've been burned by it before.  So think I'll wait and see if the game is good first as if it costs a bit more it shouldn't be too much extra.

Nicking just socks is a rookie move. What you should actually do is just nick a couple of odd socks. That way it will send them mental trying to find the other socks to pair them up.

Sadly looks like I'm out.  I knew this day was coming but didn't expect it this soon.  Seems like my GPU (GTX 980) is finally being left behind, even on Low I'm getting less than 60 FPS at 1080p and it just isn't smooth.  Obviously gets much worse by increasing settings.

Yeah, I heard this morning even streamers with a 3080 had to put it on low graphical settings. Shame you can't go back to console mate.

Good news regarding the Standard DIGITAL version in regards to crossgen.

This version (currently £69.99), will now include cross gen so you know don't need to buy the £90 "cross-gen" bundle which includes the season pass. I'll be getting the the standard version now it has cross-gen as we can always make a decision later down the line if the Season Battle Pass bit is worth buying. £20 saved which is nice unexpected surprise.

I bought the Gold edition for whenever i can afford to move to PS5. I cannot wait to get my hands on it in the early access days, i am going in completely open minded to see what the next evolution is for the franchise.  I believe the specialists are simply a means to an end in terms of micro transactions. There is no doubt in my mind it is to replicate cods financial success with skins .

Battlefield has always been my favourite FPS . I look forward to squading up with you savages ❤❤

Quick update chaps , i have been playing the early access multiplayer and when you look past the odd graphical glitch (I have the launch version of the PS4 btw) the gameplay mechanics are great . I am legitimately having a blast. Then again the odd texture pop I've become a custom to 😂😂

I am expecting a patch before launching for all editions but its really good lads
