So, if I was you all, I would work in order of this for which mods to check out and explore

Vanilla Minecraft (this means the core game)

Metallurgy

Project e/ Natura/ Harvestcraft

all others

Protip: If you see a fruit tree, instead of chopping it down. Leave it, and harvest fruit when it grows for free food

Also, here is a guide for Metallurgy

When you say "check out a mod" Bart, is this something we have to add or is it already in our install?

Also, I noticed he didn't mention gold?

ITs already added in, so checking it out means learning what the blocks and recipes are

Just so you all know, you can repair your gear in this game.

Either through Repair Talismans

Combining 2 near broke items of the same type.

You can make an Iron Block to repair items on.

You can also put chainmail in a furnace

Luke 23:34
'And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they don't think it be like it is, but it do."

We've caved and bought Minecraft for the PS4 for my son. I have to play with him because he doesn't know what he's doing. Neither do I much really still!

What are the quickest ways to get hearts back?

To expand on that, your food has to be full to regain your health.  The best way to get food is to make farms with the quickest and easiest in the beginning is a wheat farm so you can make bread.  Bread isn't the best but it will keep you alive until you have a chicken/pig/cow farm up and running.

Steak is the best as far as health bar regen, and stamina and what not goes.

What I do though, is start a wheat/ potato farm immediately.

8-12 blocks of wheat, and another 4 for potatoes

Thanks Bart. What's weird is I'm cooking meat and not being able to eat it?

Also, whats the basics of getting a farm going?

If you've cooked meat, put it on your hot bar, select it and do whatever the PS4 equivalent of right click is ...if you have trouble still, let me know and I'll jump on my copy to sort it out for you.

To amplify what Bart said, I found the easiest way was to dig a trench 8 blocks long and fill it with water. Apparently the water will have an effect 4 blocks around it so hoe the surface for 4 blocks each side and plant your seeds. 8 blocks for the water is just a bit OCD'ish on my part as 4x2x8 = 64 which is a complete stack of seeds.....you can obviously also plant at the ends as well

Don't forget to chose a communal house build <nudge> ;):)
