Activision have just released information stating they made $800,000,000 in 3 months from microtransactions across their franchises, as fans are 'embracing' new content and remaining 'engaged' with the products.  I think we can pretty much assume that Modern Warfare will be plagued with MTX's shortly after release especially taking into account the money lost from the pass aspect. I think they'll do maybe four battle passes totaling £40 to mitigate that and then probably something even more aggressive than what we saw in Casino Ops 4 gunsmith related stuff.

 

The only positive is that Infinity Ward produce much higher quality content than the cartoony trash Treyarch designs which wouldn't even be fit for purpose in most F2P mobile games.  I just hope IW can maintain the seriousness and quality of the reworked MW brand, than resort to childish coloured crap and comedy melee weapons we've seen before.

It completely depends how they implement the loot boxes.  I don’t really have a problem with loot boxes that don’t change the game.  But them if you want to but there’s no cost to me for not buying them.  It’s when they become Treyarch style of loot boxes and have OP guns in them that then ruin the game and there’s no other way to get those guns.

 

I understand why they had to be OP guns though, they needed people to feel they got something good for the hundreds or thousands they spent on loot boxes.  That’s great but it ruins the game and alienates people who can’t or don’t want to buy loot boxes.

 

I suppose though it must make financial sense.  If they’re making 800million in 3 months on lootboxes that is way more than they could make on releasing a new game and getting new customers.

 

I know I’m building myself up for disappointment but I’m still hoping that they will be cosmetic only or stupid items that don’t actually affect the game.

Depends on the strategy. If it's pay to win, I won't even consider buying the game. If it's modeled after Warframe, Overwatch or Rainbow 6 Siege I will consider it. Correct me if I am wrong but the latest Call of Duty had some pay to win in it for gun specific loot drops.

I believe some weapons were pay to win and others you had to even pay money  via a pass just to become eligible to unlock them in supply drops or unlock them via long-term challenges. The game just got greedier as it progressed and I think Activision were basically using it as a testing product/platform for future microtransaction formats.

 

I believe there is a lot more 'pay to win' weapons out there than people would believe though - regardless of what the in-game weapon stats say, some I'm sure are more powerful under the hood than their free or more common counterparts.

I think the culture of China is much different to the other parts of the world where even in Destiny they have a separate vendor that allows players to buy exotics that you can get in game.

 

I'm with the majority that if we get some really decent cosmetic stuff then maybe it's worth it.

Yeah, it has its own versions of games and gamers usually only play a select few rather than a range of titles over there. Chinese gamers also usually spend long periods gaming, mostly for the benefit of in-game items to sell and a lot of them relentlessly cheat for whatever reason. Tenecent own a large holding of a lot of these popular games over there and they have their own breed of customers who expect certain things from products. If you gave them a game like God of War or some shitty mobile game where you could drop items, they'd probably choose the latter to play.

I won't be buying no loot boxes, I've avoided it in other games as I don't want to and refuse to back that sales model. Until everyone does the same we will get this shit. Don't blame Activision blame the fools that spend the money ultimately it's their fault.

100% agree Gary, I get the impression most people feel the same.  The problem is that they only need a small number of people buying loot boxes to make them worth it.  1 person spends £100 on loot boxes, that covers the next 9 people that don’t and nets them more profit than they would make if all 10 bought a new game.

Looks like they are making more money on loot boxes than ever now even after all the controversy and them not even being on sale in some countries.  Also bear in mind a large chunk of their income is from a game that's widely recognized as being shite and has an exceptionally low population.  The remaining people in these games must be spending on average some serious money and sadly it is those customers Activision care about rather than how many and who bought the game itself. They made £50 out of me with Black Ops 4 but a regular player still playing 8 hours a day today may have spent £500+. 

 

If only the COD community would stand up to this practice like the SWBF2 lot then it would radically change how Activision did things for the better but the COD community for some reason loves spending big money on crappy guns for annual games.
