My PC is NO LONGER knackered damnit

Sadly yes, it's true, PC won't start, not even enough to access bios.

Well, it starts, thinks for a second, stops, starts again, rinse and repeat.

Hopefully it's just a dying PSU, and I've got an EVGA Supernova G3 80 Gold arriving tomorrow. 750 watts.

Really hope it's the PSU and  nothing else but the CPU is just as old and so is the RAM...

99.99999999 it's the PSU.

in the mean time, try booting off one ram stick. Ram sticks don't fail in pairs so try boot on one, if fails, try next one.

Also. When your PC boots it will beep. Listen to the beeps, they are a code and will tell you what the problem is if the mobo isn't fucked.

What motherboard you got?

Not great news on the PC front.

Checked each RAM sticks to see if there was a problem there. Nope.

Installed a new PSU (which was a bastard of a job due to some tight cabling). Switched on. Same issue still.

So, options are becoming limited.

I’ve read online about CMOS, MoBo battery reset etc but I’m no expert and it looks like I’m going to need a new Mobo, or CPU.

I can really do without the expense but I suppose the MoBo is an old Z87X UHD3 and was probably due to be updated...just not now damit, if that's what it is..

I may call in a specialist for advice, but for the moment I’m a console peasant.

Annoying.

The CMOS is just a small watch battery correct? You can disconnect it and reconnect it?

Yep, but it's just one of many possible things to check and I haven't the knowledge/context around any if it to be confident i know what I'm doing.

I have a guy coming round later to check all the components, one by one.

Hope you manage to sort it soon mate.

My brother bought a fairly new PC but had it made by the company he bought it from. He had an issue with his graphics card heating up and the fans not spinning at start up. The shop told him to contact this repair shop who have gone and fucked up. They replaced his GPU which is fine, they replaced his HDD for whatever reason, reformatted his PC entirely and broke his case. Never trust these shady companies with a PC.

I keep telling him to make sure they haven't swapped parts out for a cheaper alternative.

He now needs to try sort it out.

I decided on the Corsair H100i.

Also, as my case is a fucker to manoeuvre around in and the new water cooler will be bigger, I'm you going to get a new case. Can't believe how long it took me to replace the power supply the other night...

So that's a new PSU and cooler and case this month. After getting the new GPU before Christmas. The PSU wasn't fucked after all but I've got a better one now with 10 years warranty.

I'm tempted to upgrade the CPU but I think I need to buy some food this month too[emoji28]

The guy came who came round was pretty competent and knew what he was doing. I was standing over him, quizzing him on his every move, so he needed to be[emoji41]

I've heard of horror stories like you described. In fact, the first place I phoned and described my issue made me laugh out loud with their suggestions and I pity anyone who uses them. Fortunately I know a few things, i just lack patience...

With your faulty pump eh?[emoji57]
Faulty because it was getting really powered up the first few seconds and shooting it's load, completely spent, before trying again and failing repeatedly.

Hope that helps[emoji1787]

Why not just buy an air cooler? No need for water cooling unless you’re overclocking, even then my 2500k is overclocked to 4.4ghz on air and rarely breaks 60deg. From memory your Ivy Bridge also runs cooler than my Sandy.

My CPU is from the summer of 2013, Haswell it be. I was on a laptop before that.

Overclocked to 4.4 too but I'm a demon for worrying about temperatures.

PC is working again but the little darling still needs some more TLC I fear.

In the end, I have this month added a new and better PSU; a new and better CPU cooler; and a fucking excellent case. If I do say so myself.

But I also:

  • Had to get rid of the 2TB HDD as it was no longer drawing in any power. Still have my 250 and 500 GB SSDs.
  • Also, found that I have a RAM issue. I now have only 8GB, as I have 4 sticks of 4BG RAM but two of the ports aren't working, not the sticks, the ports. So I have 2 x 4BG of DDR3 if anyone wants it.
  • With the BIOS being corrupted, my clock speed is down to 3.8 and I'm a bit hesitant about doing the overclock again.

My plans this year to get an ACER Predator are now up the spout as....

I think that around mid April I may look to buy a new motherboard and DDR4 RAM. And while I'm doing that, I may as well upgrade the CPU as well.  I've got a pretty special GPU and I suppose I may as well complement it with decent partners, which will be expensive but hopefully I won't spend another penny for another 6 years...🙄

You really have explained why when we first met I have always had reservations of fully going back into the PC world. I always worry for that day when your PC becomes irrelevant or 'old' even when it doesn't feel old.

I hope the new build last 10 years mate 🤞
