Dead By Daylight has been around for a year and a half now on PC and was released last year on console and has been very popular. It's also one of the most unique and enjoyable concepts created in gaming. It's a 4v1 survival game where 4 survivors in 3rd person have to escape a map by powering 5 generators and opening the exit doors against a lone killer who plays in first person. Killers can eliminate players by capturing and hooking them on hooks scattered around the map. 3 hooks and the survivor will die but other players can save them before this happens by risking their own saftey to get them off the hook. Gameplay overview here http://www.deadbydaylight.com/manual/gameplay/ and how the scoring works http://www.deadbydaylight.com/manual/score/ which affects the ranking system http://www.deadbydaylight.com/manual/ranks/. Blood Points earned in matches can be spent on the Bloodweb http://www.deadbydaylight.com/manual/bloodweb/

There are 12 survivors available to play; each with their own default perks http://www.deadbydaylight.com/manual/survivors/ - more can be earned along with items through the Bloodweb. There are 11 killers that the lone player can choose from which also have their own preset perks along with their main power (i.e weapon) http://www.deadbydaylight.com/manual/killers/ Each killer is incredibly well crafted, different to another and immense fun to play.  The killer role demands skill but they don't need to kill all players to 'win' the match - gathering enough points (see scoring above) can see them rank up. A survivor can even rank up by earning enough points even if they are ultimately killed. Player ranks are reset once a month usually on the 13th but character ranks remain and each one has 3 prestiges comprising of 50 levels.

I highly recommend checking it out - you can get it on Steam for £15 and £7.50 in the sale and it's about £10-20 on console. A tought game to master but a very unique one at that and definitely worth a look. There are no supply drops, microtransactions or anything that impacts gameplay either - you are responsible for your own and even your friends performance as you work together to escape on the selection of maps available. Game is also being regularly updated with balancing tweaks and new chapters consisting of new killers, perks and maps.

So is this similar to Overwatch where a team composition is significantly more important that 6 really good individual players? 4 or 6 player?

I like the idea of co-operative and meaningful teamwork. How regular does it get updates?

Core matchmaking is based on your player rank and you start your way at level 20 and aim to reach level 1.  If you are playing solo, you will be matched with 3 other similarly ranked players although with ranks being reset each month; you may see a level 20 player but they may have just started from scratch again but are a really good team player who has been rank 1 many times before. You can also play with friends (Survive With Friends) which welcomes all ranks. This is a game that really encourages teamwork and every match can play out drastically different which is great and makes ranking up more challenging. You really have to think on your feet and have good awareness.  A good team aims to get generators done quickly and if players are hooked; they try and save them as best they can whilst trying not to comrpomise their own saftey in the process. Timing and players working in sync is key as matches can easily have a domino effect where one player gets caught and then others also get impacted and this means gens aren't being done. Matches can last from 7 minutes to over half hour. As points matter; players will do their utmost best to help others and from experience; it's one of the best co-op experiences going where everybody of any ability can play a crucial part.

It's pure fun but with competitive and teamwork elements; for such a basic concept; it does go really deep which makes it such an ingenious game.

Developers work on the game round the clock and they are always balancing and improving the game. Major updates (chapters) happen every 6 months or so which see a new killer, new perks, new map and new add-ons.  Funnily enough the new killer from the Saw movies was released yesterday
